The animated series South Park is changing its name to South America for its 29th season, a joke aimed at President Donald Trump’s push to insert “America” into geographic names.
The change was announced by the show’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, as reported by DR, citing Ritzau. The new season premieres on September 17 at 4 a.m. Danish time and will stream on Paramount+.
According to Variety, the renaming was prompted by Apple and Google’s decision to follow Trump’s wish to change the name of Lake Ontario. In a joint statement, Parker and Stone said they were inspired by the two companies’ courage and love of the fatherland.
A pattern of renamings
Shortly after his inauguration in January 2025, Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. Last week he signed an order changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America.
Google and Apple have both adopted the name Lake America, DR reports. In Canada, the lake is still called Lake Ontario.
Per The Guardian, Trump’s most recent naming proposal came just one day before South Park announced its own name change. On his social platform Truth Social, he suggested renaming the state of New Mexico “New America”, alongside an AI-generated video.
The difference in that case is legal. The American president does not have the authority to rename a U.S. state on his own, DR notes.
Emmy win over the weekend
The name change is the latest in a long series of jabs at the president from South Park. As noted by The Guardian, the series has repeatedly targeted both Trump and his administration.
Over the weekend, the show won an Emmy for the episode “Sermon on the Mount” from season 27. In that episode, Trump is portrayed as Satan’s lover, a thread the creators carried through the season.
One of the season’s most talked-about scenes showed a fully naked, AI-generated Trump walking through the desert. On Monday, Parker and Stone followed up on X with an animated image of Trump without pants, holding an Emmy statuette, captioned with a line about him finally getting his award.
South Park has been on air since 1997 and has made mockery of people in power a regular feature. Trump is among the show’s most recurring targets. In July 2025, an episode featured a deepfake version of the president in bed with Satan.
