A US federal judge has dismissed the final claims in the harassment and discrimination case brought against the touring company of American singer Lizzo, who has performed twice at Roskilde Festival.
Danish broadcaster DR reports that the last decision in the case landed this week. The accusations were brought by Asha Daniels, a former wardrobe designer on the singer’s 2023 tour. According to the court documents cited by DR, the conduct described was inappropriate and unprofessional, but within the limits of the law.
As reported by The Guardian, Daniels filed her lawsuit in September 2023. She alleged bullying, sexual and racial harassment, disability discrimination and a hostile work environment. Both Lizzo and her company Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc. were named as defendants.
Per USA Today, US District Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha removed Lizzo as an individual defendant in December 2024. The judge found that Daniels was employed by the touring and payroll companies rather than by the singer personally.
Law360 reports that the same judge granted summary judgment to Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc. on September 1, 2026. The remaining claims were dismissed for lack of sufficient evidence.
What the order said
According to The Guardian, the written order found that Daniels had not identified conduct showing general hostility toward women. The judge also found no evidence that men and women were treated differently. The alleged behavior fell within the ordinary tribulations of the workplace, outside the protection of Title VII.
Lizzo has responded to the ruling in a video posted on her Instagram profile, DR reports. She stated that the truth mattered more to her than anything else, and that she had promised to keep fighting the claims made against her. She wrote on the video that the truth had prevailed.
DR notes that the singer hired defense attorney Marty Singer, who has previously represented Johnny Depp, Bill Cosby and Chris Brown. Three of Lizzo’s former dancers had made similar accusations about an unsafe work environment before Daniels came forward.
The Danish connection
Lizzo played Roskilde Festival in 2019 and again in 2023, according to DR. The lawsuit was filed little more than a month after she left the Orange Stage. She has won four Grammy Awards.
P3 radio host Nynne Givskov told DR that the accusations were striking because the singer built her profile on body positivity and inclusion. Givskov said the case has damaged her image more than her sales, since her personality and message were central to her appeal. She added that the ruling could become the starting point for new music.
Daniels’ lawyer has expressed disappointment with the decision, DR reports. It remains unclear whether the ruling will be appealed.
