Former Kerteminde mayor Sonja Rasmussen is still waiting for a buyer for her home in Dalby on Funen. The 1933 villa has been on the market since June 2025.
Rasmussen, 65, put the masonry villa on Dalby Bygade up for sale 14 months ago. Avisen Danmark reports that the property remains unsold. She has lived in the house since 1992.
The home measures 204 square meters. She bought it 34 years ago with her then husband, and the decision came about an hour after the viewing, according to the outlet. Rasmussen estimates that her decision to leave has taken around five years to mature.
Dalby is her childhood village, which she had been away from for more than 10 years. She was renting in Munkebo with her husband and their five-year-old son Jonathan when the house search began. Their wish list included two bathrooms and no large renovation project.
The family ended up replacing the sewer system and the electrical installations, among other work. Rasmussen describes the result as a house with soul, filled with children and their friends. Parents of the children’s friends became part of the household’s daily life.
Her circumstances changed abruptly about 12 years ago. She stepped down as mayor, divorced, and her youngest child moved out of the house. She then bought her ex-husband’s share and has handled the old property alone since.
Her children Jonathan and Franciska remain attached to the house, and so do her two grandchildren. Her 11-year-old granddaughter Nynne has found the prospect of a sale difficult, because of the many corners to hide in.
Rasmussen does not plan to buy another villa. She intends to rent instead, ideally a house with a small garden that requires less work. Most of all, she says, she would like a co-housing arrangement with more everyday contact.
The garden no longer draws her the way it once did, she told Avisen Danmark. She names Bøgebjerg Strand as her refuge, where she brings a garden chair and a newspaper. There she sits and looks out over Storebælt and the horizon.
Background
Rasmussen was mayor of Kerteminde Municipality from 2010 to 2013 for the local list Borgerlisten. DR has previously reported on how she took the mayor’s post in Kerteminde and later lost it. Her tenure is also listed in reference works such as Wikipedia, updated in 2025.
In her working life she has handled leadership sparring, coaching and conflict management for general practitioners. She left the labor market at 64 and is now setting up as self-employed. Her plans include giving talks based on her leadership experience.
No other national or regional outlets have reported on the sale of the Dalby house.
