Musik i Lejet expansion sparks uproar at town hall

Around 700 residents filled Helsinge Hallen on Wednesday evening for a heated dialogue meeting about Musik i Lejet’s plans to expand activities at Vejby Camping. The meeting was called by the city council in Gribskov before it decides on the festival’s application.

DR reports that the moderator had a busy evening, as shouts came from the floor throughout. One participant called out that there was no real dialogue taking place. Most of the input from the room expressed concern and opposition rather than support.

Local politicians said the aim was to involve residents early in the process. The council wants citizen input before it decides on the possible expansion of Vejby Camping, where the festival is held. Participants were seated at six-person tables to discuss arguments for and against the plans.

Musik i Lejet has applied to grow from three summer music days to events spread across a total of 19 days a year. According to DR, the program could include music, events and corporate parties. The campsite is owned by the festival itself.

Noise, traffic and property values

Co-founder Andreas Grauengaard presented the festival’s vision for the expanded program, which organizers say will create more life and activity in the area. He opened by saying the proposal has created intense debate and that the festival regrets this. The debate resumed as soon as he finished speaking.

Concerns at the meeting centered on noise, heavy transport, late garden parties and falling property values. One participant, identified as a doctor, said noise from concerts and heavy traffic could be harmful to health. Ahead of the meeting, DR’s regional coverage in July reported that neighbors fear disturbance all summer.

The music magazine GAFFA reported in July 2026 that the expansion plans had met local resistance and had not yet been approved by the municipality. In an interview with Ekstra Bladet on July 17, 2026, Grauengaard said the festival will never return to its original location at Tisvildeleje beach. He said it is now held at the former Vejby Camping under a dispensation from the municipality.

Why the meeting was held now

Gribskov Municipality announced in June 2026 that residents were invited to a dialogue meeting on August 19 about the further process toward a possible new local plan for Vejby Campingplads. The municipality set the meeting for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and said it would form part of the basis for the later political treatment of the case.

Politicians in Gribskov will now discuss the objections and proposals raised at the meeting. The city council must then decide on the application from Musik i Lejet, and on whether the local plan for the site should be changed or kept as it is.
