50,000 customers forced to new electricity supplier

More than 50,000 customer contracts, including around 30,000 electricity customers, face a forced transfer into Energidrift as part of a reconstruction sale tied to the distressed Velkommen group, raising consumer alarm over both price stability and access to their own money.

The transfer involves four companies under reconstruction: Velkommen, Nettopower, Vedvarende, and b.energy. According to DR, a total of 52,400 customer agreements across electricity, gas, mobile, and other services are planned to be sold to Energidrift A/S. The deadline for creditor objections passed on 24 July 2026, with the planned transfer date set for 25 July 2026, as reported by Ekstra Bladet.

According to TV 2’s reporting, the reconstruction adviser said Energidrift was the only significant buyer available. Forbrugerrådet Tænk, Denmark’s consumer council, expressed concern about the transfer. Director Winnie Grosbøll told TV 2 that the council was quite concerned about so many customers moving to a company that appeared somewhat mixed in its record.

When electricity switching becomes involuntary

Electricity switching in Denmark is normally handled administratively. In normal circumstances, supplier changes do not interrupt power delivery. But this case is different because it is not a voluntary market choice.

According to DR, Forsyningstilsynet found that Velkommen and Nettopower were too slow in returning customer balances in 91 percent of cases. Customers had 80 million kroner in prepaid balances at the start of 2025, DR reports. Separately, Forsyningstilsynet reported Edison El and Dansk Strøm to police in December 2024 for failing to comply with orders to repay customers on time.

Energidrift A/S is the buyer in this reconstruction sale and is a separate company from Velkommen, Nettopower, Edison El, and Dansk Strøm. According to Ekstra Bladet, Energidrift will not take over the liabilities of the selling companies. The documented refund delays and police report concern the selling companies, not Energidrift. That background still shapes the debate over whether selling more than 50,000 contracts to Energidrift solves the reconstruction problem or merely transfers customer risk to a new address.

The price gap behind the Energidrift offer

Public price listings for Energidrift on comparison portals show a sharp split between its introductory mover product and its standard tariff. The newcomer offer, marketed as an indflytter fastpris, carries no monthly subscription fee and costs 20 øre per kilowatt-hour for the first six months. After that period, customers move onto the regular fixed-price contract at 148.75 øre per kilowatt-hour including VAT, plus a 29-krone monthly subscription.

That gap is more than seven times the introductory rate. For a household using 4,000 kilowatt-hours a year, the difference between the promotional rate and the standard tariff runs to several thousand kroner annually. Customers transferred through reconstruction may not be assigned the mover product at all, and no primary source specifies which tariff transferred accounts will receive.

No binding period, but 30 days’ notice required

Energidrift’s own terms state it has no binding period on its contracts. Customers can cancel at any time with 30 days’ notice. That flexibility matters for anyone who wants to leave after a forced transfer. Customers should act quickly once they receive written notice of the change, especially before winter electricity prices rise again.

The practical challenge for internationals is that navigating customer service disputes in Danish can be difficult. Keeping copies of invoices, account statements, and any final settlement notices from the selling companies is prudent, since documented repayment delays concerned Velkommen and Nettopower specifically.

What customers should do now

Anyone affected should verify their current contract terms, any deposit held, and whether a positive balance is owed from their existing supplier. According to Ekstra Bladet, the Forbrugerombudsmand has stated that a transfer of this kind constitutes a supplier switch, requiring final settlement within four weeks and repayment of any overpaid advance amounts.

Once the transfer is confirmed, customers can cancel with 30 days’ notice if they want to move to another supplier. The official comparison portal, Elprisportalen.dk, operated by the Danish energy ministry, lists multiple price models, and some introductory rates are temporary. Checking the full yearly cost rather than just the headline rate is essential before deciding whether to stay or move.

For recent arrivals who qualify for Energidrift’s mover offer, the 20 øre rate listed on comparison portals is low relative to current market fixed-price levels. But it applies only for six months, and the standard tariff that follows is significantly higher. The reconstruction sale may resolve a corporate insolvency problem, but affected customers still have clear steps to take if they want to avoid unnecessary costs or delays in receiving money back from their previous supplier.
