Danish store owner Jesper Tønnesen never expected his new hat design to go viral. What started as a small protest against Donald Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland has quickly become a massive trend spreading from Copenhagen to Nuuk.
A Viral Message from Nørrebro to Nuuk
A bright red cap with the slogan “Nu det NUUK!” has taken social media by storm. The design, a playful twist on Trump’s well-known MAGA hat, includes the phrase “Make America go away” next to the Greenlandic flag. What began as a tongue-in-cheek reaction has become a symbol of support for Greenland amid rising political tension over U.S. claims to the island.
Jesper Tønnesen, the owner of McKorman, a clothing shop in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro neighborhood, first came up with the idea last summer. The design gained little attention at first, selling fewer than ten pieces. But following Trump’s latest remarks suggesting that the U.S. might “need to own” Greenland, the cap’s message suddenly resonated with many Danes and Greenlanders.
Because of that, interest in the cap exploded. McKorman sold one hundred hats over the weekend, and both the Copenhagen shop and a store in Nuuk quickly ran out of stock.
Rising Demand and a Powerful Message
Tønnesen made the cap to show solidarity with Greenland’s people and to highlight their right to self-determination. The issue of Greenland’s status has deep roots reaching back to when Greenland was granted autonomy from Denmark.
Interestingly, the “Nu det NUUK!” hat is not a profit-driven project. Each sells for 150 Danish kroner, with around 100 kroner going directly to the charity “Grønlandske Børn,” which supports Greenlandic children. So far, the fundraiser has earned over 8,000 kroner.
Tønnesen emphasized that he never intended to make money from political turmoil. For him, it was about the message, not the profit. He expressed pride that Greenlanders themselves can now wear the hats both in Nuuk and Copenhagen, strengthening a sense of unity between the two communities.
Symbolism Beyond Fashion
The viral hat demonstrates how humor and social commentary can overlap in modern Danish culture. Without a doubt, the combination of local wit, design, and ethical values reflects Denmark’s growing interest in socially conscious fashion. Similar trends can also be seen in other Danish clothing brands, as explored in Denmark’s best clothing stores, where purpose-driven design continues to attract more attention.
Meanwhile, many believe the success of the “Nu det NUUK!” cap is also about timing. As international headlines again focus on Trump’s view toward Greenland, Danes are using creativity and design to make a political point. Some see it as a reminder of Greenland’s complex relationship with both Denmark and the United States.
Next Steps and New Designs
Because of the hat’s popularity, Tønnesen confirmed that a new English-language version is already planned. He hopes it will help spread the message more clearly to American audiences who might not understand the Danish wordplay. However, he is keeping the new slogan secret for now after noticing similar designs appearing online just a day after his cap went viral.
In contrast to fast fashion trends, the “Nu det NUUK!” project focuses on cultural expression and shared values. While it began as a small, humorous idea, it has sparked meaningful discussion about Greenland’s independence, political identity, and Denmark’s role in the debate.
A Danish Response to a Global Debate
For a moment, what seemed like a local act of activism has turned into an international conversation. From Nuuk to Copenhagen, people are using a piece of clothing to express something far deeper about belonging, solidarity, and national pride. Strangely enough, a simple red cap now represents a quiet but firm message: Greenland’s future is for Greenlanders to decide.
