Skoda takes the top spot as Denmark’s best-selling car of 2025, while Tesla faces a steep decline despite a late-year boost. The latest statistics reveal major shifts in the country’s car market, where European and Chinese brands battle for attention.
Skoda Surges Ahead as Tesla Falters
Danish car sales data for 2025 show a major shake‑up. Skoda’s new electric SUV, the Elroq, became the year’s top‑selling car with 10,623 units sold. The model’s affordable price and practical size made it a favorite among Danish buyers looking for smaller electric SUVs.
Meanwhile, Tesla lost significant ground. Its Model Y delivered impressive December numbers with nearly 1,700 sales, but that late comeback was not enough. The model ended the year third overall with 7,672 sales, trailing behind Volkswagen’s ID.4 at 8,572. Tesla finished only eighth among car brands, a notable drop after years of dominating the charts.
Volkswagen Group Dominates Danish Market
Volkswagen Group, which owns VW, Skoda, Cupra, and Audi, captured nearly 40 percent of all new car registrations in Denmark. Seven of the group’s models landed on the national top ten list. Among them, the VW ID. Buzz stood out as a surprise success. Its nostalgic design, inspired by the old VW bus, attracted a strong fan base across the country.
Beyond Volkswagen’s success, the German luxury competition grew even fiercer. Mercedes secured third place among brands, helped by its popular CLA model. Audi followed closely with the Q4, and BMW finished just behind. The three premium German automakers all ended the year in the top five, signaling how generous tax breaks on electric vehicles have made high‑end cars far more attainable for ordinary Danes.
New Challenges Ahead for Global Automakers
The start of 2026 brings new launches from Mercedes and BMW that will shape the next round of this rivalry. Mercedes is expanding with a CLA station wagon, while BMW prepares the updated iX3. These releases aim to counter rising competition from Chinese manufacturers that are gaining traction across Europe.
At the same time, several established brands are struggling to regain popularity. French automakers like Peugeot and Citroën are working to rebuild market share. The Citroën ë‑C5 Aircross, known for its comfort and competitive pricing, could help close the gap with cars like the Skoda Enyaq, though some buyers find its standard equipment limited.
Chinese Brands Make Stronger Moves
Chinese brands continued to make headway in 2025, performing better than many analysts expected. The Xpeng G6 entered Denmark’s top ten for the first time thanks to a major update and record‑fast charging speeds. The model’s success hints at how Chinese EV makers are starting to appeal to Danish consumers who once focused mainly on European cars.
Another newcomer, Zeekr, saw major attention with the Zeekr 7x and expects more buzz with its upcoming 7GT station wagon. These models have already generated solid sales and could test whether Chinese cars can build long‑term credibility in a competitive market.
Not all brands shared in the progress. BYD, despite being one of the world’s largest EV manufacturers, still struggles to win Danish buyers. Its recent launches have yet to reach the popularity it enjoys globally.
Renault, Toyota, and Others Seek Revival
French automaker Renault managed to return to the Danish top ten with the new electric Scenic. However, its former bestseller, the Renault 5, slipped out of the top 20 after a strong previous year. For yet another year, Renault finds itself just behind Tesla in overall ranking.
Japanese manufacturer Toyota, once a dominant name in Denmark, ended 2025 in seventh place overall. The company plans a lineup of new electric cars to attract environmentally focused Danes. Despite its broad range and reputation for reliability, Toyota recognizes that Danish drivers are increasingly turning toward newer European and Chinese EVs.
