Several major Danish banks were hit by severe technical problems Monday evening, leaving thousands of customers without access to accounts, transfers, and online services across the country.
Major IT Outage Hits Danish Banks
Nearly all major banks in Denmark were affected by a sudden IT breakdown late Monday. According to reports, the company Bankdata, which provides technical infrastructure and services to several Danish financial institutions, confirmed ongoing difficulties.
The outage disrupted systems at leading banks such as Danske Bank, Nordea, and Jyske Bank. Data from Downdetector showed widespread complaint spikes shortly after 7 p.m. local time. This large-scale failure triggered immediate concern among private customers and businesses relying on digital payment systems.
For some, it recalled earlier disruptions like the Danish payment system crash that temporarily disabled card and mobile payments across the country.
Which Banks Were Affected
Besides the country’s largest institutions, many regional and local banks also experienced problems. Reports confirmed that Sydbank, Arbejdernes Landsbank, Spar Nord, Sparekassen Sjælland-Fyn, Nykredit, Skjern Bank, Andelskassen, Ringkøbing Landbobank, Coop Bank, Djursland Bank, Lægernes Pensionsbank, Lollands Bank, and Vestjysk Bank were all hit.
Bankdata delivers IT services to seven financial institutions, including AL Bank, Sydbank, Jyske Bank, Ringkøbing Landbobank, SJF Bank, Skjern Bank, Djursland Bank, and Kreditbanken. According to national news agency Ritzau, it remains unclear whether all of them were equally affected, but disruptions appeared widespread.
Given Denmark’s heavy reliance on digital banking, even short outages can create serious ripple effects. Many Danes conduct daily payments and transfers exclusively through apps and online platforms, which makes banking in Denmark particularly vulnerable when technology fails.
Technology Provider BEC Also Experienced Problems
At the same time, BEC, another major IT provider to Denmark’s financial sector, reported technical issues Monday night. The company supports institutions such as Nykredit and Arbejdernes Landsbank, both of which were listed among the affected.
BEC representatives confirmed that an internal problem had been identified and that troubleshooting was underway. Although the full cause remains unknown, engineers within both service networks were working in parallel to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
By late evening, several banks warned customers that both online and mobile banking services could remain unavailable for hours. Many users also faced errors when withdrawing money or using debit cards, adding further pressure on systems already strained by digital dependency.
Ongoing Efforts to Resolve the Outage
Both Bankdata and BEC indicated that investigations were ongoing. The source of the network failure has not yet been determined. However, early data suggests an issue involving shared infrastructure used by multiple financial companies.
Banking experts say such incidents underline the sector’s vulnerability to centralized digital systems. When one provider fails, dozens of institutions can go offline simultaneously. That situation can instantly disrupt consumer confidence and business operations, especially during busy financial periods close to the holidays.
Without a doubt, the outage has reignited public debate about Denmark’s growing reliance on a handful of IT suppliers. As mobile payments and online platforms increasingly replace cash transactions, any sudden failure can freeze parts of the economy. Authorities and banks are now reviewing existing safety procedures to prevent similar national-scale disruptions in the future.
What Happens Next
At this stage, there is no confirmed timeline for a complete recovery. Several banks reported gradual improvement during the late evening, yet many customers still experienced reduced access to key services. Bankdata pledged continued updates as soon as more information becomes available.
Meanwhile, Danish consumers were reminded that technical failures can occur even in one of Europe’s most digitized economies. As the past few years have shown, from earlier IT outages to the nationwide payment crash, resilience remains one of the sector’s most urgent challenges.
