Teens Slam Danish PM’s Cringey TikTok Videos

High school students in Denmark criticize a new TikTok profile showing Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in an informal and playful light, stirring debate about political communication and authenticity online.

Students question the prime minister’s TikTok debut

At Støvring Gymnasium in North Jutland, students reacted with skepticism after discovering an account called “mette_insider” on TikTok. The videos show Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dancing, laughing, and joining in lighthearted jokes with young people, including moments where she calls herself “cute.”

According to Denmark’s Social Democratic Party, the account is run privately by one of their employees, not directly by the prime minister. Still, several observers suggest the initiative feels like a political move designed to connect with younger voters through a platform Frederiksen has previously spoken critically about.

A surprising shift from past criticism of social media

In recent years, Frederiksen has often condemned social media’s influence, calling out what she described as manipulative algorithms. Her government has also supported guidelines discouraging members of Parliament from using TikTok on government-issued devices due to security concerns.

Because of that, the sudden appearance of a friendly and casual TikTok account surprised many Danes. The videos highlight a very different side of Denmark’s head of government—one often associated with seriousness and authority since becoming the country’s youngest prime minister in modern times.

Meanwhile, analysts note this type of strategy may aim to refresh Frederiksen’s image among young people who form the next generation of voters.

Teen reactions: “It feels unserious”

Students interviewed by Danish media found the videos more odd than engaging. Some said the content looks detached from how they perceive the prime minister and that it seems more like an attempt to gather support among first-time voters. Others commented on the number of videos showing hot dogs, a theme that references Frederiksen’s longstanding use of everyday Danish food in her social media appearances.

One student expressed disbelief that Denmark’s political leader would spend time on this kind of content, while another described the tone as “unserious and unrelated to politics.”

Experts see political calculation behind the strategy

Political communication experts, including former Social Democratic strategist Benjamin Rud Elberth, interpret the move as a deliberate attempt to rebrand the prime minister. Digital outreach, they argue, is increasingly essential for politicians seeking relevance on platforms dominated by youth culture and short-form video content.

In that light, the TikTok profile could be an effort to reintroduce Frederiksen as approachable and human, softening her public image after a period marked by serious decision-making and controversial policies.

Elberth has previously explained that in the world of elections, all methods to reach new voter groups are considered fair strategy. The Social Democrats possibly view this as a way to counter falling approval ratings and to reconnect with an audience skeptical of traditional politics.

Interestingly, the online response mirrors a broader trend in Danish political life where leaders seek to bridge formal politics with the everyday digital interactions of citizens. As seen in other campaigns, TikTok has become an essential platform for shaping image and relatability.

Balancing relatability with credibility

From what I can tell, Frederiksen’s challenge lies in balancing this new, humorous side with her established authority. While it might attract attention from younger voters, it risks appearing inconsistent with her earlier criticism of social media.

In contrast, younger audiences may appreciate the attempt at openness if handled authentically. The test will be whether Danes view the TikTok presence as genuine communication or pure electioneering. As a result, the prime minister’s team now faces the delicate task of aligning digital playfulness with political integrity.

Political observers expect more experimentation like this in future campaigns. Whether this approach will change the perception of Mette Frederiksen or simply add a meme-worthy chapter to Danish politics remains to be seen.
