Hundreds of Danish citizens are being targeted by SMS scams that impersonate the official health portal, Sundhed.dk. Cybercriminals are sending fake messages directing recipients to fraudulent websites designed to steal personal and banking information.
Spike in Fake Text Messages Alarming Authorities
The Danish public health information website, Sundhed.dk, has sounded the alarm following a surge in scam text messages sent to citizens. These messages, appearing to come from legitimate sources using Sundhed.dk’s logo and name, are designed to deceive users into clicking on malicious links and providing sensitive information.
Each day, the portal is receiving hundreds of reports from concerned users who have received these fraudulent messages. The scammers typically try to lure victims by claiming urgent action is needed, such as a request to pay for a new health card, followed by a link that directs users to a counterfeit website indistinguishable at first glance from the real one.
Public Told: Delete Messages Immediately
Authorities are urging the public to delete these messages on sight and never input personal or banking details via questionable links. To help citizens identify legitimate communication, Sundhed.dk has reiterated that it does not send information through SMS or email. All official contact is made through the secure website and accessed using Denmark’s national digital ID, MitID.
The health portal is also encouraging people to inform family members and friends about the scam to reduce the number of potential victims. This form of awareness is especially important among older users, who may be more vulnerable to digital fraud schemes.
Digital Fraud Cases On the Rise
Scams like this are part of a worrying trend in Denmark and across Europe. According to Denmark’s Ministry of Digitalization, in 2023, the nation saw over 35,000 cases of IT-related financial crime. That represents an increase of 30 percent compared to the previous year.
Fraud tactics increasingly use fake SMS messages or phone calls to trick people into thinking they are communicating with banks, government agencies, or even law enforcement. The goal is almost always to deceive victims into disclosing sensitive personal data or banking credentials.
A Trusted Platform Exploited by Criminals
Sundhed.dk is Denmark’s nationwide public health portal, established in 2003 to allow citizens and healthcare professionals to access health records, test results, and medical information. The platform plays a vital role in day-to-day healthcare management for both patients and providers. On a typical day, the portal serves approximately 130,000 users, ranging from private citizens to doctors and nurses.
Its prominence and high level of trust have made it an attractive target for impersonation by cybercriminals. What may appear as a harmless text to the unsuspecting user can become a gateway for identity theft or financial exploitation.
This is not the first time Sundhed.dk has been targeted. Back in late September, similar scam attempts were detected, and users were also warned about impersonations at that time.
Combating Cybercrime Through Public Awareness
Government agencies and cybersecurity organizations in Denmark continue to stress the importance of public vigilance. They recommend that users adopt healthy digital habits, such as verifying URLs, never sharing passwords, and reporting suspicious messages to the proper authorities.
The government is investing in educational outreach to combat digital fraud, particularly among older generations who may be less tech-savvy. Efforts include national campaigns, partnerships with banks, and updates to digital platforms that enable quicker identification of suspicious activity.
Staying Safe in the Digital Healthcare Age
Digital services have streamlined many aspects of public life in Denmark, but they have also opened new avenues for deception. As public reliance on platforms like Sundhed.dk grows, so does the need for robust security and widespread awareness.
Danish citizens are reminded to always verify the source of any request for payment or personal information. The safest way to interact with services like Sundhed.dk is to type the website address directly into a browser and log in securely using MitID. As this wave of scams continues to evolve, vigilance remains the strongest defense.
