New Study Finds That Digital Fraud Soars in Denmark

The rise of digital fraud in Denmark has escalated significantly, with nearly 100,000 more citizens becoming victims within a year, emphasizing a pressing need for collective preventive measures against cybercrime.

Surge in Digital Fraud in Denmark

Recent findings indicate a dramatic increase in digital fraud cases across Denmark, with a nearly 45% rise in reported victims between 2023 and 2024. According to a comprehensive study conducted by the Ministry of Justice, the National Police, and the Crime Prevention Council, the number of Danes falling prey to digital scams has soared to approximately 274,000, up from 189,000 the previous year. This alarming trend underscores the pervasive nature of cybercrime in modern society.

The study noted a significant proliferation of various types of cybercrime, notably the misuse of payment card information and online trading fraud. In 2024, around 131,000 individuals reported being defrauded through false online shops or during private transactions on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, DBA, and GulogGratis. This marks an increase from 85,000 reported incidents in 2023. Similarly, cases of payment card fraud affected 110,000 Danes in 2024, a stark rise from 76,000 victims the prior year.

Challenges in Combating Cyber Crime

Erik Christensen, the chair of the Crime Prevention Council, stated, “Fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated, exploiting our trust, busyness, and willingness to help.” The rise of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, is expected to further exacerbate cybercrime in the coming years. This development highlights an urgent need for society to adopt comprehensive strategies to combat online scams effectively.

The prevalence of cybercrime affects individuals irrespective of age or gender, yet many citizens lack awareness of where to seek assistance when facing digital fraud. Tania Schimmel, the head of prevention at the Crime Prevention Council, remarked, “We have spoken with numerous municipalities and volunteers who are calling for greater support and local collaboration to protect citizens.” She advocates for the national cyber strategy to broaden its focus on a nationwide effort aimed at better shielding Danes from digital fraud.

Fact Sheet on Cybercrime in Denmark

To frame the extent of the issue, here are some key statistics:

  • As reported in 2024, nearly 6% of Danes experienced digital fraud, translating to approximately 274,000 victims, up from around 4% in 2023, which represented 189,000 individuals.
  • Out of the reported incidents of online trading fraud, two-thirds of the victims reported engaging with online shops, with many falling prey to private individuals via social media platforms—50% via Facebook and 33% via Den Blå Avis.

The growing threat of digital fraud necessitates a united front among individuals, organizations, and governmental bodies. By staying informed and vigilant, the Danish populace can help combat the rising tide of cybercrime, preserving both financial security and public trust in digital interactions.
