According to a recent survey conducted by Epinion for the Confederation of Danish Industry (Dansk Industri, DI), more than half of Denmark’s population plans to spend the fall break at home. In contrast, only around one in six travelers will venture abroad this year.
The survey, which gathered responses from over 1,000 Danish adults between September 5 and September 22, 2025, reflects a clear shift in vacation habits. Compared to a few years ago, 20% of respondents said they are now more likely to stay in Denmark during the autumn break.
Young Adults Lead the Trend
The new vacation pattern is most evident among Danes aged 18 to 34. This age group is increasingly opting to stay local for their week-long getaway in October. In contrast, people over 65 are the least likely to remain in Denmark, suggesting that older generations may continue to prioritize travel abroad, possibly due to higher disposable income or a stronger tradition of international holidays.
Economic Concerns Drive Decision to Vacation in Denmark
The primary reason behind this domestic holiday trend is financial. According to the survey, 27% of Danes cited personal finances as their main reason for not going abroad. With inflation continuing to strain household budgets and everyday costs on the rise, many are reconsidering the value of overseas vacations.

Higher prices in supermarkets and fluctuating energy bills have made it harder for families to justify the additional cost of plane tickets, hotel stays, and other travel expenses. As a result, staycations in Denmark, often involving trips to the countryside, local attractions, and summer homes, have become a more appealing option.
Global Conflicts Have Limited Impact on Vacation in Denmark
Interestingly, while geopolitical instability has escalated in recent months, with war zones in the Middle East and rising tensions globally, these factors have had minimal influence on Danes’ travel plans. The survey shows that 72% of respondents reported no change in their travel behavior due to the current international situation.
Only 20% indicated that conflicts and political unrest worldwide contributed to their decision to stay in Denmark, suggesting that domestic financial pressures carry more weight than global events when it comes to vacation planning.
Summer Houses in High Demand During Vacation in Denmark
Staying local doesn’t mean staying home. Summer houses across Denmark are experiencing a surge in demand. Among Danes choosing to vacation domestically, a striking 60% report plans to spend their fall holiday in a rented summer house.
Vacation rental company Novasol confirmed that all their properties equipped with indoor pools are already fully booked. Similarly, Feriepartner Denmark, another major summer house provider, noted a 56% increase in weekly bookings compared to the same period last year.
Nature and Local Attractions Appeal to Locals
Asked about how they plan to spend their time off, Danes showed a strong interest in outdoor activities such as nature walks and playground visits. These options topped the list, followed by trips to movie theaters, zoos, and aquariums. More than 30% of respondents planning a domestic vacation said they intend to visit such attractions.

Notably, environmental concerns seem to have had little impact on vacation choices. Only 5% of those surveyed mentioned reducing their carbon footprint as their main motivation for staying in Denmark.

The local travel trend brings a silver lining for Denmark’s economy. Increased spending on local attractions, restaurants, and accommodations supports jobs and stimulates economic activity across communities. With tourism playing a vital role in rural regions, the current rise in domestic vacations may offer a welcome economic boost nationwide.
