Sabine Prenslev Christensen moved from Zealand to Silkeborg and found no one to explore nature with, so she built the outdoor app Trailmates, which has now passed 2,000 users.
Danish broadcaster DR reported on September 13, 2026 on the app and its founder. Christensen had lived most of her life on Zealand before moving to Silkeborg in Jutland. She chose the town because of the surrounding nature, but she had no one to share it with.
According to DR, she first tried to find local outdoor enthusiasts through ordinary social media platforms. She told the broadcaster that the contact quickly became superficial, and that she disappeared from those channels again. Many beautiful places exist that locals are eager to show, she said.
Her response was the Trailmates app, where users can create outdoor events for others to join. Per DR, the activities include running, cycling, climbing and a range of other nature-based outings. Users can chat, match and sign up for events created by other members.
Adventure friend or romantic partner
When creating a profile, the first choice is whether the user is looking for an adventure friend or a romantic partner. As stated by Christensen to DR, that option exists mainly to create a sense of safety for those who are not seeking romance. She noted that people can have a lovely family and still lack someone to sleep in a shelter with.
The app was launched in March 2026. At the time of DR’s report it had passed its first 2,000 users. Christensen told the broadcaster that at least one couple has already formed through Trailmates, which she described as fantastic.
What has made the strongest impression on her, she said, is hearing from people who had longed for someone to share nature with and then found that person. She added that people become a better version of themselves when they do something they enjoy.
One of the places Christensen has walked since starting the app is Vejlbo Mose, a bog near Silkeborg. DR described morning mist over the water lilies there, with sheep audible in the background. The area sits close to the Silkeborg lakes, a stretch of forest and water in central Jutland.
Christensen’s stated aim is for members to meet around nature as a shared interest rather than around dating alone. DR’s report was written by journalist Johanne Marie Poulsen and published in the broadcaster’s domestic news section. It did not include user figures broken down by region or activity type, or details on how people explore nature in Denmark through the platform.
