Police have confirmed that a 14-year-old boy received a sanction from Denmark’s Youth Crime Board over an attempted arson attack on a mosque in Aarhus in May 2026. The case was reported on August 25, 2026.
The attempt targeted a mosque on Nørre Allé in Aarhus. According to DR, the attack was inspired by the so-called NVE networks, a collective term for online groups that glorify violence and extortion. Østjyllands Politi confirmed in writing to DR that a 14-year-old boy was sanctioned in the Ungdomskriminalitetsnævnet, the Youth Crime Board, on July 7, 2026.
Police declined to comment on the details of the case. It is not known what the boy himself has said about the allegations, or how he has responded to them. As reported by TV2 Østjylland, the investigation is continuing.
Inside the mosque, the congregation’s prayer room was doused with gasoline, and the carpet has since been replaced, DR reported. Ekstra Bladet reported that the incident took place overnight on May 26, and that gasoline was also poured around the building. Per Avisen.dk, officers were called to an address on Nørre Allé after a report of a break-in, found gasoline, and treated the case as attempted deliberate arson.
Aarhus councillor calls for review of city efforts
Metin Lindved Aydin of Radikale Venstre, the councillor for Health and Care in Aarhus, visited the mosque days after the attempt. He described people who were deeply affected, and said a young person had dragged gasoline inside and soaked carpets and furniture. He added that it is only possible to guess what would have happened had the fire been set.
Aydin has contacted two of his fellow councillors to establish what measures the municipality has in place against radicalization. According to DR, he believes the situation is new, and that extremism must now be looked for in teenage bedrooms rather than in specific milieus.
DR noted that this is not the first case connected to the NVE networks. In early August 2026, three teenagers were arrested on suspicion of planning a terror attack at Hadsten Skole, and those charged were also linked to the same violent online community.
The strength of the network link is described differently across outlets. DR presents the NVE inspiration as part of its own reporting, while Stiften has written that the mosque case may be connected to a violent online network. Stiften also reported that the targeted building belongs to Århus Islamisk Menighed.
