Stone hits car on Køge Bugt Motorway, police seek witnesses

A car windshield was smashed by a stone thrown from a footbridge over the Køge Bugt Motorway on Sunday afternoon. The 42-year-old driver was not hurt, and police are now looking for witnesses.

The incident happened as the woman, who is from Greve, drove north toward Copenhagen. DR reports that the stone struck her windshield as the car passed under a footbridge. The information comes from the daily report of Mid and West Zealand Police.

According to the driver, the stone was roughly the size of a tennis ball. She told police it came from above, but she saw no one on the footbridge. She was not injured, though police describe her as shocked after the episode.

The woman continued to Vallensbæk, where she pulled over and called the police. Officers received the report from that location. Police put the time of the incident at around 2:15 p.m., based on her account.

Mid and West Zealand Police are asking anyone who saw people on the footbridge before or after that time to come forward. No suspect has been named in connection with the case.

Two similar cases on the Amager Motorway

Per DR, two other cars were hit by stones on nearby stretches of motorway within the past two weeks. One case took place on Sunday, August 30, on the Amager Motorway near the Avedøre Holme exit. The second happened on Wednesday, September 2.

Copenhagen Vestegn Police informed Ritzau on Friday that both episodes are being investigated as intentional acts. The stones are believed to have been thrown from a motorway bridge. Nobody was injured in either case.

One of those cars sustained only surface damage, while the other had its windshield shattered. Police confirmed on Friday that stones caused the damage. They did not give further details about the stones, including their size.

The three cases have not been publicly linked to one another. Mid and West Zealand Police cover the Køge Bugt Motorway incident, while Copenhagen Vestegn Police handle the two Amager Motorway reports.

Earlier conviction in Fredericia case

Stone throwing from motorway bridges has previously led to prison sentences in Denmark. In February 2025, a 15-year-old boy was sentenced for throwing stones from a motorway bridge in Fredericia, DR reports.

He was found guilty of creating an imminent danger to a motorist’s life or physical safety. The sentence was 60 days of suspended prison. He chose not to appeal the verdict.

The Køge Bugt Motorway is one of the busiest routes in the country, connecting Copenhagen with the towns along the coast to the south. Driving in Denmark on that corridor involves passing under several footbridges and road bridges.

Police have not said whether they will increase patrols in the area. Anyone with information about Sunday’s incident is asked to contact Mid and West Zealand Police.
