Queen Margrethe II hospitalized for a week in Copenhagen

Queen Margrethe II was admitted to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on Sunday after feeling unwell, and is expected to remain in hospital for about a week.

DR reported the admission in a live blog on Sunday, September 6, under the headline that the Queen had been hospitalized after feeling unwell. The broadcaster said it was following the situation as further information became available.

The admission was confirmed in a press release from Kongehuset, the Royal House of Denmark. According to the statement, the Queen was taken to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen after an episode of feeling unwell earlier in the day.

What the Royal House says

Per the Royal House, doctors have found a new blood accumulation in the hip region as well as mild dehydration. Both conditions are being treated at the hospital.

The statement adds that the Queen is in good spirits and is doing well under the circumstances. Kongehuset says she is expected to remain hospitalized for about a week.

As a result of the hospital stay, Queen Margrethe will not travel to Norway this week. The Royal House states that she will not attend the funeral of King Harald V in Oslo on Wednesday.

Rigshospitalet is Denmark’s largest hospital and part of the Capital Region of Denmark. It has treated members of the Danish royal family on previous occasions.

Margrethe II stepped down from the throne in January 2024 after 52 years as head of state. She was succeeded by her elder son, King Frederik X, and retained the title of Queen.

The Royal House has not announced any changes to the calendars of other members of the family. DR said it would continue updating its live coverage.

Neither DR nor Kongehuset has given a time for a further medical update. The Royal House press release is the only official account of the Queen’s condition so far.
