Denmark is investing in sustainable tourism by allocating over 58 million DKK to 15 innovative projects with tourism in Denmark in focus. These projects aim to boost year-round tourism, enhance visitor spending, and ensure long-term sustainability.
Major Tourism Investment Across Denmark
To strengthen Denmark’s competitive position in global tourism, the Danish Business Promotion Board (Danmarks Erhvervsfremmebestyrelse) has announced an investment of 58.5 million Danish kroner (approximately $8.4 million) in 15 tourism development projects. This initiative supports the national tourism strategy and aims to stimulate growth through environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable practices. The funding will help Denmark grow tourism safely and sustainably.
The selected projects span from the Limfjord and Wadden Sea regions to the island of Funen and the capital, Copenhagen. The goal is to not only attract more tourists throughout the year but also increase the amount of money they spend while visiting. These projects aim to make tourism in Denmark better for everyone.
Focus on Sustainable and Regional Growth
The national tourism strategy, “Paths to Sustainable Tourism Growth,” serves as the foundation for these investments. Key areas of focus include city tourism, coastal and nature-based tourism, as well as business and conference travel. The initiative aligns with Denmark’s broader 2024–2027 corporate development strategy, which emphasizes local and cross-regional partnerships.
Each selected project will receive between 1.5 million and 7.8 million DKK in funding, depending on scope and impact. The projects were chosen out of a total of 24 applications submitted to the board.
Unlocking the Potential of the Wadden Sea
One example of a funded initiative is a new project titled “The New Normal – Sustainability as a First Choice,” based along the Wadden Sea coast. This area—designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is known for its unique combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage. The project aims to offer authentic, high-quality visitor experiences while promoting sustainable practices with tourism in Denmark.
The focus will be on developing guided tours, themed travel packages, and business tourism offerings that integrate outdoor activities and environmental awareness. Business travelers in particular offer potential for weekday visits, helping reduce the strain during peak tourist periods.
The project is a collaboration between Destination Vadehavskysten (Wadden Sea Coast), National Park Wadden Sea, Coastal and Nature Tourism in Denmark, and VisitDenmark. Together, these partners aim to strengthen the overall tourism ecosystem while preserving one of Denmark’s most iconic regions.
Support for Local Communities and National Economy
Tourism is recognized as a significant economic driver across Denmark, creating jobs and spurring development in both urban and rural areas. It also contributes considerably to Danish exports by attracting international visitors.
By channeling resources into a wide variety of initiatives—from digital enhancements to new infrastructure and product development—the recent funding aims to diversify and expand Denmark’s tourism portfolio. The broader ambition is to make Denmark an attractive destination for both domestic and international travelers, regardless of the season.
