Night-Time Maintenance on The Great Belt Bridge Disrupt Danish Traffic

Sections of Denmark’s Great Belt Bridge will undergo nighttime maintenance next week, affecting Danish traffic flow with temporary full closures and reduced speed limits.

Essential Maintenance Work on Great Belt Bridge Set for August

Sund & Bælt, the company responsible for operating Denmark’s Great Belt Bridge, will begin important maintenance on the crossing next week. To minimize disruption for drivers, the work will be carried out during the evening and overnight hours from Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22, 2025. It’s a good idea to plan your trip to avoid the busiest times if possible.

The maintenance focuses on replacing and repairing the bridge’s expansion joints—critical components that allow the massive structure to safely expand and contract due to weather changes. These steel and rubber joints are placed between bridge sections and have worn down over decades of use, making replacement necessary. The work will help keep the bridge safe and reliable for many years.

Danish Traffic Changes and Restrictions

During the maintenance period, Danish traffic will be rerouted to one side of the bridge, where both directions will share the same lanes—also known as two-way traffic. This setup will be in effect from 7:00 PM to 5:45 AM each night.

To ensure driver safety, a speed limit of 80 km/h (approximately 50 mph) will apply throughout these hours. In addition, overtaking will be strictly prohibited.

Planned Full Bridge Closures

To reconfigure traffic lanes at the start and end of each shift, the entire bridge will be closed temporarily for 45 minutes. These complete closures will take place twice per night:

– Evening closure: 7:00 PM – 7:45 PM
– Morning closure: 5:00 AM – 5:45 AM

These closures will likely cause delays, and drivers are strongly encouraged to plan their trips around these windows to avoid long wait times.

Detailed Schedule for Full Closures

– Monday, August 18: 7:00 PM – 7:45 PM
– Tuesday, August 19: 5:00 AM – 5:45 AM and 7:00 PM – 7:45 PM
– Wednesday, August 20: 5:00 AM – 5:45 AM and 7:00 PM – 7:45 PM
– Thursday, August 21: 5:00 AM – 5:45 AM and 7:00 PM – 7:45 PM
– Friday, August 22: 5:00 AM – 5:45 AM

Bridge Safety and Structural Integrity

The challenge of maintaining a structure like the Great Belt Bridge lies in its constant exposure to extreme variations in temperature. These fluctuations force the structure to expand during heat and contract during cold, placing stress on the joints. Expansion joints—clearly visible from the road deck—absorb this movement and prevent structural damage.

The Great Belt Fixed Link is one of Denmark’s most vital infrastructure assets. Since opening in 1998, it has significantly reduced travel time between the country’s eastern and western parts. The bridge spans 18 kilometers (about 11 miles) and serves over 250,000 vehicles each day during peak periods such as holidays and summer weekends.

How to Stay Informed

Drivers who frequently use the bridge can stay updated on closures and Danish traffic conditions by subscribing to Sund & Bælt’s 48-hour SMS alert service. To enroll, text “BRO INFO” to 1245. In addition, up-to-date information is available on the official bridge website, Storebaelt.dk.
