Aarhus University says all 70 places on its new medical program in Herning have been filled at the first intake. The students will take the master’s part of their degree with Regionshospitalet Gødstrup as their base hospital.
DR reported on August 25, 2026, that the new medical program in Herning reached full enrollment in its very first admission round. Aarhus University stated that 70 incoming students have accepted places on the track.
Students complete the bachelor’s part of the degree in Aarhus and then the master’s program in Herning. Regionshospitalet Gødstrup serves as their stamhospital, or base hospital. Teaching takes place in SUND+, a new education and health house where medical students share daily life with nursing and radiography students.
Lise Wogensen Bach, pro-dean for education at the Faculty of Health at Aarhus University, said the result shows real interest among future medical students in training outside the large university cities. The stated purpose of the program is to educate doctors in the part of the country where doctor coverage is thinnest. Per Wogensen Bach, many doctors settle near the place where they studied and gained their first clinical experience.
Split start in 2026 and 2027
According to the Aarhus University press release distributed via Ritzau, the first 35 students begin their bachelor studies in Aarhus in autumn 2026. The remaining 35 start through a winter intake in February 2027. The release notes that the group is joining a program with no earlier cohorts to draw on for experience.
Uddannelsesmonitor reported the same day that the new education house in Herning has full enrollment at its first offering. The outlet confirmed the figure of 70 accepted medical students and noted that the program is anchored in SUND+.
As stated by VIA University College, SUND+ is housed in a refurbished former oncology building on Herning‘s old hospital site. The building is planned to accommodate around 400 students across health programs when fully phased in.
Earlier capacity figures differ from the current intake number. In November 2025, Aarhus University announced that the Herning master’s track would expand to 60 students per year from 2029, up from an initial plan of 30. An information page from Regionshospitalet Gødstrup, updated in July 2026, describes 30 master’s students admitted per semester once the program is fully rolled out.
The August 2026 press release does not reconcile the 70 students with those earlier figures. It states that this is the first time the faculty has offered a medical track where the master’s degree is taken in Herning.
The announcement follows the conclusion of the first recruitment cycle. Aarhus University had promoted the Herning option ahead of the application deadline on March 15, 2026, according to a press release from February 2026. The university describes the master’s program in Herning as a three-year degree combining teaching in SUND+ with clinical placements at Gødstrup and in local general practice.
