A forgotten bag of Christmas gifts is creating a small holiday mystery in western Denmark. One woman is now trying to find the rightful owner before the presents end up in the wrong hands.
Unexpected discovery on a train ride
Some people misplace hats or umbrellas on Danish trains. Others, apparently, forget wrapped Christmas gifts. That is exactly what happened on Christmas Eve between Ringkøbing and Holstebro, where a collection of presents was left behind.
Inside the bag was a gift box with Giorgio Armani products, a couple of Grimbergen beers, and a bottle of Fanø rum. The items are now sitting safely in the home of Inge Hansen from Ringkøbing, who is determined to return them to their owner.
If you are traveling by train in Denmark, this story serves as a reminder to double-check your seat before getting off.
A personal note offers clues
While the outside of the bag did not include an address, there was a clue inside. A tag revealed the gifts were intended for “René” from “Maria.” Alongside it lay a small children’s drawing labeled “uncle.” From this, Hansen assumes the recipient might be a relative named René.
The bag was not actually discovered by Hansen herself. It was brought to her by a friend who noticed the presents lying unclaimed in the train carriage. The friend, who does not have a permanent home, traveled from Holstebro back to Ringkøbing before deciding to hand them over to Hansen, believing she would do the right thing.
Hansen says she never considered keeping any of it. Instead, she wants to ensure that the gifts end up in the right hands.
Facebook search for the owner
On December 25, with the help of her daughter, Hansen posted about the discovery in the local Facebook group “Os i Ringkøbing.” The post quickly gained attention, but so far, no one has come forward who matches the names or items.
She later found out that the gift box was purchased in Herning, suggesting that the sender or receiver may live in central Jutland.
Despite the lack of responses, she remains optimistic. According to Hansen, the gifts are safe in her care, and she hopes that whoever is missing them sees the story soon.
Next steps if no one claims them
If no one reaches out in the coming days, Hansen plans to leave the bag with DSB, Denmark’s national train service. Handing it over to the staff at Ringkøbing Station might give the forgotten presents a better chance of finding their way back.
At this time of year, Danish train staff often handle many lost items—from misplaced scarves to wrapped presents—especially around Christmas when people travel cross-country to see family.
For travelers who may be flying into Denmark this winter holiday season, it helps to know how to get from the Copenhagen Airport to the city center or other regional destinations and how to secure your belongings on public transport.
Wider reminder about holiday travel
Every Christmas, countless parcels and small packages are forgotten on public transit. While rail companies store them temporarily, many never make it home. Hansen’s effort shows how community spirit in small Danish towns can make a difference.
Even though this story began with a lost bag, it has turned into something more heartwarming. It is a reminder that small acts of kindness and honesty often keep the holiday spirit alive long after the Christmas lights fade.
As Danes prepare for New Year celebrations, Inge Hansen’s search continues. With some luck and the reach of social media, “René” might soon reclaim his lost gifts.
