Islands Brygge assault: 2 more charged in fatal case

Copenhagen Police have charged two more men with violence over an assault at a World Cup big-screen event on Islands Brygge in June, in which a 32-year-old Swedish man later died of his injuries.

A 24-year-old Danish citizen and a 29-year-old Somali citizen are the latest to be charged in the case, DR reports. According to the charges, the 24-year-old stamped on the 32-year-old Swede while he was lying down, and also struck another Swedish citizen.

The 29-year-old is charged with kicking that second Swedish man. He is further charged with breaching an entry ban imposed on him in an earlier case. Police say he was charged by phone and through his defense lawyer, because they have not yet been able to locate him.

Politiken reports that the new charges follow the continued police investigation into the incident. The three cases against the accused will be handled separately, as there is nothing to indicate that the men acted together.

The first man charged remains in custody

A 31-year-old Danish citizen was already charged with violence in the case. He has previously been sentenced to seven years in prison for violating the knife law and for attempted manslaughter. He is held in pre-trial detention until August 26 and pleaded not guilty at his first custody hearing on July 3.

The prosecution takes the view that the 31-year-old faces eight to ten months in prison for knocking down the Swedish man, who hit his head in the fall and later died of his injuries. BT has reported that a court rejected his request for release. The same sentencing demand was described by TV 2 in late July.

What happened on June 30

The assault took place on June 30 at a public big-screen event on Islands Brygge in Copenhagen, held for the World Cup finals. The screen was showing a match between Norway and Ivory Coast.

Copenhagen Police confirmed in a press statement that officers were called to a violent incident at the event, where a 32-year-old Swedish citizen was seriously injured. The statement said the investigation was continuing.

Politiken reported in early July that the man died at Rigshospitalet and that he was a tourist in Denmark. TV 2 reported that he was initially in life-threatening condition before he died.

TV 2 also reported on July 5 that witnesses described several people taking part in the assault. Copenhagen Police have not issued a separate public press release about the two new charges.
