India youth movement launches nationwide campaign Sept 1

India’s youth movement Cockroach Janta Party has announced a nationwide campaign starting September 1, along with an open membership drive. The group says it wants to collect young people’s demands on education, employment and public institutions.

The movement, also known as the cockroach party, presented its plan for the coming months after a two-day meeting of its national working committee. DR reports that the campaign is called “Kya Bolti Public,” which translates roughly as “What does the public say?”

According to DR, the campaign will take the movement’s leadership around India to speak directly with young people. The group has at the same time opened a nationwide membership drive for students, young professionals and workers.

Despite its name, the Cockroach Janta Party says it does not want to become a conventional political party and will not contest elections. It describes itself instead as an independent pressure group that wants to hold India’s institutions accountable.

Frederikke Bencke, a PhD student in Modern India and South Asian Studies at the University of Copenhagen, told DR that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government should take the development seriously. Per Bencke, Generation Z has managed to make Modi give in under pressure.

As stated by Bencke to DR, the young generation no longer trusts the government or state institutions and views them as corrupt. She said the movement is now trying to hold those institutions to account and give a microphone to voices ignored during Modi’s time in office.

From online movement to mass protests

The Cockroach Janta Party emerged in May 2026 and has since grown from an internet movement into demonstrations with tens of thousands of participants. DR notes that supporters gathered in New Delhi to celebrate after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down following several days of protests in July.

Mockery of the Modi government has continued on social media, while Modi has posted videos addressing young people directly. According to Bencke, he speaks in a young idiom in those videos, which she described as entirely new and a consequence of the pressure.

She added that the government’s reaction is notable because Modi has long profiled himself as a strong leader who does not yield to pressure.

The movement’s founders adopted the cockroach label after Indian Supreme Court judge Surya Kant compared unemployed young people to cockroaches in May 2026. Bencke told DR that the cockroaches were underestimated, and that killing one produces ten more.

Why the campaign starts now

The group’s own announcement ties the timing to a new organizational push, with the countrywide campaign set to begin on September 1. DR reports that the movement is trying to preserve the momentum it has built since May, when the protests began.
