Hillerød Municipality has agreed a new four-year budget that sets aside about 100 million kroner for traffic, including 67.5 million kroner for upgrades to Peder Oxes Allé.
DR reported on September 18 that a budget agreement has landed in Hillerød, in North Zealand. Traffic improvements were given high priority by local politicians. Mayor Christoffer Lorenzen of the Conservative People’s Party said the spending is necessary.
The parties on the municipal council are together setting aside roughly 100 million kroner for the traffic area. According to an announcement from Hillerød Municipality, all parties on the council are behind the deal. The agreement covers the next four budget years.
The largest single share goes to Peder Oxes Allé, where politicians have allocated 67.5 million kroner. Per the mayor, the work should improve flow for motorists, buses and cyclists, and also raise road safety. He said several analyses had pointed to a traffic breakdown on the stretch if nothing was done.
Public transport also in the deal
The agreement also covers collective transport in the municipality. Among other things, the parties want to establish a bus connection with frequent departures between Favrholm Station and Hillerød Station. The route would run via Nyt Hospital Nordsjælland and Trollesmindeallé.
Traffic problems have occupied the municipality for a long time. DR has previously reported on motorists sitting in long daily queues in the city. Lorenzen said Hillerød has several times been named as having Denmark’s worst road network.
He said businesses and families across the municipality have felt the effects. As a result, the focus has been on widening and improving existing roads. According to the mayor, less weight was given to urban development than in earlier budgets.
Asked by DR whether the money is enough to end the municipality’s traffic problems, Lorenzen said it is not. He said he believes the measures will take Hillerød a good distance forward. He added that he is most pleased that a direction has been set for roads and traffic.
Traffic was also a central theme in the campaign before last year’s municipal election in Hillerød, DR noted. The new agreement is backed by the full municipal council. It sets the framework for spending over the coming four years.
The planned bus link would connect two stations and the new hospital site. Hillerød Municipality has published the full budget agreement on its website. The improvements to Peder Oxes Allé are expected to ease queues in the years ahead, according to the mayor.
