Despite slower than usual ticket sales for Roskilde Festival 2024, the event officially kicked off Saturday with thousands of eager festivalgoers arriving at Denmark’s largest music festival to set up camps and celebrate what many consider the highlight of the summer.
The Festival Begins Amid Surprising Ticket Availability
Every year, Roskilde Festival opens its camping areas the Saturday before the main music program begins. Traditionally, passes sell out well in advance, but this year ticket sales lagged behind expectations. For the first time since 2013, full-week passes were still available online just days before headliners are set to take the stage at the iconic Orange Scene.
This unexpected twist didn’t stop early arrivals from filling the grounds with excitement. By noon on Saturday, the camping fields bustled with activity. Music fans—many in their late teens to early thirties—were already laying claim to their favorite spots, setting up tents, and firing up portable sound systems for the week ahead.
A Festival for Everyone
Among the incoming crowd were groups from all over Denmark and beyond. Campers from high schools, friend groups, and international communities brought a mix of traditions, humor, and spirit. One festivalgoer traveled all the way from Tromsø in northern Norway for her second Roskilde, joining her Danish friends in a shared tent community. Others took a more local approach, commuting home each night to skip the chaos of sleeping outdoors.
Festival inclusivity stood out this year. One attendee, who uses a wheelchair due to a lifelong mobility condition, arrived ready to enjoy the week’s concerts with no limitations. Thanks to improvements in accessibility and a strong support system from his friends, he emphasized that Roskilde offered the same joyous experience to everyone, regardless of physical ability.
New Initiatives and Traditions
As Roskilde Festival evolves each year, 2024 brings several new features to the experience. Most notably, the festival has introduced strengthened sustainability efforts. Upon arrival, all guests are handed waste-sorting bags in four categories: residual waste, plastic and food cartons, metal, and glass. Volunteers help explain the process, with many attendees welcoming the environmental initiative.
Creative camp traditions thrived, as usual. One camp—Camp Kost—was founded in 2022 around a broom they found en route to a Post Malone concert, now lovingly dubbed “Kost Malone.” The broom has since become both a mascot and a navigation aid, outfitted with an Apple AirTag to prevent theft. Elsewhere, Camp Havenisse declared itself a utopian collective for Roskilde’s most imaginative campers, complete with elf-inspired themes and nightly celebrations.
Shifting Priorities Among Returning Attendees
For returning fans, the festival experience has matured over time. Longtime attendees in their late twenties and early thirties reminisced about the heyday of arriving purely for the party. Now, they prioritize concerts as much as socializing, often seeing four or five performances per day and starting mornings with freshly brewed coffee instead of just beer.
Several cited artist Charli XCX as one of the most anticipated acts of the week, along with Danish names like Anton Westerlin, Aphaca, Emma Sehested Høeg, and Artigeardit, drawing enthusiastic crowds across both local and international audiences. The festival’s capacity stands at around 130,000, though organizers expect slightly fewer attendees due to the slower ticket sales.
Ready for the Main Event
Though only the camping experience began Saturday, anticipation continues to build leading up to Wednesday, July 2, when the main music program launches. Enthusiasts have set up elaborate campsites, donned everything from glitter-styled outfits to matching pink beer bongs, and carved out miniature communities ready for a week of music, art, and togetherness.
Meanwhile, over 110,000 people travel to and from Roskilde Festival by train annually, and this year the festival’s train station has received a visual makeover. But few arriving guests paused to admire it, focused instead on hauling luggage, sound systems, and carefully packed refreshments to their encampments.
Roskilde Festival 2024 is now in full swing—despite the surprise of unsold tickets, the spirit of community, music, and summer celebration shows no signs of slowing down.
