A new transformer station at Nørre Alslev on Falster was inaugurated on Friday, part of a build-out of 15 stations intended to move more wind and solar power into homes, apartments and small businesses in Eastern Denmark.
The station was opened on August 21, 2026, as DR reports. It is one of 15 new transformer stations currently being built by the grid companies Cerius and Radius across Eastern Denmark. The stations are designed to handle power from wind turbines and solar panels and distribute it to detached houses, apartments and smaller companies.
Simon Hansen (S), mayor of Guldborgsund Municipality, welcomed the opening. Per DR, he said new transformer stations are needed to transport electricity to residents and local businesses. He added that the station strengthens the municipality’s ability to attract new companies that require green energy.
Frederik Dahlgaard, planning chief at Cerius and Radius, said the stations are essential if green power is to keep pace with rising electricity consumption. Without them, he said, customers would be left unable to connect to the grid or draw the power they want. DR notes that hundreds of new electric cars arrive in Danish carports every day, and all of them need charging.
Part of a billion-kroner grid project
According to Cerius, the Nørre Alslev site marked the start of a billion-kroner collaboration with Nexel and Skanstec Engineering to build 15 transformer stations on Zealand and Lolland-Falster. The company says the official groundbreaking took place on May 19, 2025. Cerius states that the first seven main stations are scheduled to be usable by the end of 2026 and during 2027.
The industry group Green Power Denmark identified Nørre Alslev as the first of the 15 main stations. It said Cerius-Radius is building four to five main stations a year. The group linked the Falster project to growing electrification on the island, driven by rising consumption and new solar production.

DR describes the core problem as demand for electricity exceeding available grid capacity. DR’s climate analyst, Filip Knaack Kirkegaard, said the new station gives residents and smaller businesses on Falster reassurance that there is enough power. But one station does not solve the nationwide problem, he said.
Kirkegaard said the backbone of the grid is generally being expanded too slowly, which affects larger commercial projects such as data centers and green manufacturing. Those projects must wait for the backbone to be built out, he said. Responsibility for that lies with the state grid operator Energinet.
As stated by Kirkegaard, politicians at Christiansborg are currently discussing an emergency plan for the grid expansion.
