The Conservative People’s Party has proposed revoking the driving licenses of people who use forged or stolen disability parking permits, as part of a four-point plan against permit fraud presented on August 24, 2026.
DR reports that the party’s justice spokesperson, Mai Mercado, wants harder sanctions for misuse and forgery of disability parking permits. Per Mercado, cheating people with disabilities is deeply objectionable, and the penalty should fall harder.
The plan has four elements. Alongside license revocation for users of false or stolen permits, the party wants stronger controls on the cards, a national campaign against disability parking fraud, and targeted enforcement in areas where misuse is suspected.
As DR notes, misuse or forgery of the permits is today typically prosecuted as fraud, document forgery or misuse of a genuine document. Those cases usually end in fines or suspended prison sentences. In early June 2026, a man received a 10-day suspended prison sentence for misusing a disability permit.
Danske Handicaporganisationer describes theft and document forgery involving disability permits as a growing problem affecting people who already face difficulties. The organization received 762 reports about stolen cards in 2024 and 2025 combined. According to its director, Katrine Mandrup Tang, the organization backs all proposals that can curb the problem and sees a need for increased control.
Tidende.dk reported in 2025 that more than 700 permits were registered as stolen over nearly two years, and that unauthorized use is usually met with convictions for fraud or misuse of a genuine document. TV 2 Kosmopol reported in 2022 that misuse can be fined under section 19 of the executive order on disability parking cards. If the act counts as document forgery, the penalty is a fine or up to two years in prison.
Parties split on license revocation
At Christiansborg, several parties call the behavior problematic but disagree on the sanction. SF’s justice spokesperson, Karina Lorentzen, says taking the license is a bit too harsh and should be reserved for the most traffic-dangerous offenses. She points instead to higher fines or possibly penalty points on the license.
The Social Democrats are more open. Justice spokesperson Lea Wermelin says the party is willing to discuss adding the sanction, which would widen the range of penalties, and mentions conditional license revocation as an option. Liberal Alliance’s justice spokesperson, Jens Meilvang, has not settled on a sanction but does not rule out the proposal.
The issue has been on the political agenda for some time. A 2025 draft law from Justitsministeriet, published via Retsinformation, proposed doubling the fine for illegal parking in disability bays to 1,020 kroner. That document addresses parking fines and enforcement, not license-related sanctions for permit misuse.
