As the summer vacation comes to an end, new travel trends are shaping the way Danes spend their summer vacation—with Spain retaining the top spot, solo trips on the rise, summerhouse vacations booming, and cooler destinations like Greenland gaining surprising popularity. Danes love to travel, but what are the most popular destinations? By looking at the numbers from the largest travel agents, certain Danish Summer Travel Trends are revealed.
Spain Remains a Vacation Favorite
Once again, Spain has emerged as the most popular foreign holiday destination for Danish travelers. The Mediterranean country’s enduring charm continues to draw summer visitors in large numbers—particularly to well-known hotspots like Mallorca, Málaga, and Barcelona.
According to travel search engine Momondo, all three cities are in the top five most searched destinations for Danish travelers in summer 2025. Hotel booking portal Booking.com reports similar popularity, listing these Spanish cities among the top seven most frequently booked by Danes.
One travel agency alone, Spies, sent approximately 250,000 Danes abroad this year, with about 100,000 of them choosing Spain. The short flight time and child-friendly environment make Mallorca an especially appealing option for Danish families, making it one of the hottest Danish summer travel trends of 2025.
Since 2001, when Statistics Denmark began tracking international travel trends, Spain has led the list of top destinations. In 2023, 15% of all longer trips (defined as at least four nights away) made by Danes were to Spain. Italy and Greece followed in joint second place, each taking in 9% of these longer trips, while Germany and France each accounted for 7%.
Danish Summer Travel Trends on the rise: Travelling Solo
Solo travel is on the rise. More Danes are venturing abroad independently, with new figures showing that in 2024, 18% of international trips taken by Danes aged 15 and older involved just one traveler. This marks a 2.5% increase compared to 2022.
This pattern is reflected across major travel companies. Both Spies and TUI have seen a growing number of bookings made by individuals traveling alone. TUI, for instance, reported a 5% increase in solo travel reservations for the upcoming summer.
While solo travel used to be considered unconventional, changing social norms and a growing number of single-person households have made it a more common and accepted choice. Many solo travelers also take part in group activities such as dance classes, hiking tours, or sports events—blending independence with community.
Cool Temperatures, Hot Trend
For some vacationers, the pursuit of sun and extreme heat is being replaced by a preference for milder climates. Danish travel agency Spies noted a sharp rise in bookings during the shoulder seasons—specifically May and September—when temperatures are more moderate.
In May 2025, the company recorded a 20% increase in bookings compared to the same period in previous years. One destination benefiting from this trend is Cyprus, where extended season offerings are now available through November. With pleasant weather ranging from 20–25°C, Cyprus is attracting visitors interested in hiking, nature, and a more comfortable outdoor experience.
Coolcation: Greenland’s Tourism Boom
One of the more surprising Danish summer travel trends is taking cooler travel options to the extreme; more Danes are setting their sights on Greenland. The trend known as “coolcation” — choosing cold-weather destinations over hot spots — has reached one of its most dramatic peaks with an explosion of interest in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.
Searches for flights to Nuuk this summer have increased by a remarkable 264% compared to last year, making it the single fastest-growing destination for Danish travelers on Momondo. Contributing to this growth is a drop in airfare prices. Direct flights between Copenhagen and Nuuk, introduced by SAS in June 2024, have cut average ticket prices by 39%, reducing costs from roughly 7,500 DKK to 4,500 DKK (about $650).
The new direct flight option was made possible by a major expansion of Nuuk Airport, completed in 2024, enabling large commercial jets to service the route.
Other Fastest Growing Danish Summer Travel Trends
Aside from Greenland, several other destinations are gaining traction among Danish summer travelers. Olbia in Italy saw a 106% surge in flight searches, while Krakow in Poland increased by 46%. Bergamo, Italy, and Incheon, South Korea, also saw significant jumps of 42% and 40%, respectively.
These travel trends reveal a more diverse and dynamic Danish travel scene—one where tradition meets innovation, and where the familiar sun-kissed beaches of Spain now share space with the dramatic landscapes of the Arctic north.
