Danish newspaper cartoonist and illustrator Klaus Albrectsen has died at the age of 94, his family announced on September 25, 2026, after a few days of illness.
DR reports that Albrectsen died surrounded by his family. The information was given to the Ritzau news agency by his relatives.
Albrectsen drew political and social satire for several Danish newspapers over his career. Among them were Ekstra Bladet, B.T. and Information, according to DR.
He was born in Copenhagen on May 11, 1932, and began drawing at the age of three. He trained as a commercial artist at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen.
In a 2022 interview with Information, Albrectsen estimated that he had made around 10,000 drawings. The newspaper noted his distinctive technique, built on dense hatching.
In that interview he said he had tried to support the oppressed and the poor. He added that the years of the Vietnam War opened his eyes to how large nations suppress smaller ones.
B.T. also reported the death after a few days of illness, citing the family through Ritzau. Its account does not add materially different details to DR’s reporting.
Exhibitions and later work
For the last 20 years of his life, Albrectsen exhibited watercolors and paper cuttings, per the family’s memorial words. He continued working in the years leading up to his death.
His 90th birthday in 2022 was marked by the Workers’ Museum in Copenhagen. The museum showed a selection of his satirical drawings and illustrations, DR reports.
Speaking to the trade union HK at the time, Albrectsen said he had drawn extensively for the labor movement. His themes included inequality, collective agreements and the lack of equality for women in the Danish labor market.
He also told HK that he was most pleased his drawings were printed. His dream since the age of 14 had been to see his work in newspapers and magazines.
In 2023, Sjællandske Nyheder reported that Albrectsen would draw the design for a large wall painting in Nykøbing. The mural was planned for the rear wall of the new outdoor music stage at Pakhustorvet.
Albrectsen lived in central Copenhagen until this summer, when he moved into a nursing home. His family wrote that he spoke until his death of his wife Lizzie, whom he lost in 2006.
Ekstra Bladet reports that the funeral service is set for Tuesday, October 6, 2026. It will be held at Holmens Kirkegårds Kapel in Copenhagen, and the family says everyone is welcome.
