Sport in Denmark occupies an important and enthusiastically supported place in national life, both as a vehicle for physical wellbeing and community building and as a source of considerable national pride at the elite level.

Football is Denmark’s most popular sport, and the Danish national football team has produced some of the most dramatic moments in international football history, including winning the European Championship in 1992 in one of the tournament’s greatest upsets. Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 and his extraordinary return to professional football afterwards captivated Denmark and the world in equal measure. Danish football clubs including FC Copenhagen, Brondby IF, and FC Midtjylland compete in the Danish Superliga and have regularly qualified for European competitions.

Handball is arguably Denmark’s most successful sport in global terms, with both the men’s and women’s national teams having won multiple World Championship and Olympic gold medals, making Denmark a genuine world superpower in this fast-paced indoor game. Cycling holds a special place in Danish sporting culture, with the Tour de France starting in Denmark in 2022 generating enormous national excitement and international visibility, and Danish cyclists like Jonas Vingegaard achieving iconic status by winning consecutive Tour de France titles. Badminton is enormously popular at the grassroots level, and Denmark has produced world-class badminton players for decades. Swimming, athletics, rowing, and sailing all have strong Danish traditions reflecting the country’s relationship with water and outdoor activity.

The Danish approach to sport at the community level reflects broader Danish values, with an emphasis on participation, inclusion, and enjoyment over elite performance, and a dense network of local sports clubs (idraetsforeninger) providing affordable, accessible sporting opportunities to Danes of all ages and backgrounds across the country.
