Music
Danish music culture spans an extraordinary range from ancient Viking chants and centuries of classical composition to globally influential jazz, rock, pop, electronic music, and one of the world’s most respected metal scenes. Denmark has an unusually rich relationship with music for a small country, reflected in world-class institutions, internationally celebrated artists, and a live music scene of remarkable vitality and variety.
The Roskilde Festival, held annually on the outskirts of Copenhagen, is one of Europe’s largest and most prestigious music festivals, consistently drawing headline acts from across the global music spectrum and serving as a defining social and cultural event in the Danish calendar. The Copenhagen Jazz Festival in July transforms the city for ten days with over a thousand concerts, from intimate cellar clubs to outdoor harbour stages, making Copenhagen one of the world’s great jazz cities every summer.
Danish classical music has deep roots, with the Royal Danish Opera and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra representing the institutional backbone of a rich classical tradition. In popular music, Denmark has produced acts with genuine international reach, including Aqua, Lukas Graham, MO, and Volbeat, whose blend of rock and heavy metal has earned them a worldwide following.
The Danish metal scene, anchored by bands like Merciful Fate and Volbeat, is regarded internationally as one of the most creative and influential in the genre. Copenhagen’s nightlife and live music venue network, from legendary club Vega to the repurposed industrial spaces of Norrebro and Vesterbro, offer a year-round programme of concerts, DJ nights, and performances that reflect the city’s diversity and creative energy.
Community singing, or fællessang, is a deeply rooted Danish cultural tradition where groups of any size gather to sing together from shared songbooks, reinforcing the Danish values of togetherness and collective expression that make music in Denmark as much a social act as an artistic one.
