Danish art has a history and a contemporary scene that both deserve far more international attention than they typically receive. From the golden age of Danish painting in the 19th century, represented by masters such as Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, P.S. Kroyer, and Vilhelm Hammershoi, whose hauntingly quiet interiors have experienced a remarkable global revival of interest in recent decades, to the radical avant-garde movements of the 20th century and the internationally celebrated contemporary art institutions of today, Denmark has consistently produced artists who push boundaries and challenge conventions.

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, perched dramatically on the North Zealand coast overlooking the Oresund strait, is one of Europe’s finest modern art museums, combining a world-class permanent collection that includes works by Giacometti, Picasso, and Francis Bacon with a spectacular programme of temporary exhibitions and a building that is itself a work of art. ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, with its iconic rainbow panorama walkway designed by Olafur Eliasson crowning its rooftop, is one of the most visited art museums in Northern Europe and a defining institution of Danish contemporary art culture. The Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen houses Denmark’s national collection spanning seven centuries of European and Danish art history.

Beyond the major institutions, Denmark’s art scene lives in a dense ecosystem of commercial galleries, artist-run spaces, public art installations, street art projects, craft studios, and design galleries spread across Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, and smaller towns and islands. Danish design, of course, is itself an art form, and the boundary between design and fine art in Denmark is deliberately and productively blurred.

Understanding Danish visual culture, from the principles of Danish design aesthetics to the stories behind individual Danish artists and the institutions that champion their work, provides a rich and rewarding dimension to any engagement with Denmark as a country and a culture.
