Buy Fireworks Now, But Light Them Later

From today, Danes can start buying fireworks, but they will need to keep their lighters in their pockets for a bit longer. New regulations now limit firework use strictly to New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with heavy fines for early celebrations.

Fireworks Sales Begin, but Lighting Them Is Still Illegal

From December 15, shops across Denmark can sell rockets, batteries, and other fireworks. But while the shelves are full, people must wait until New Year’s Eve before lighting the fuse. The law, changed last year, allows fireworks only on December 31 and January 1. Anyone caught setting them off earlier can face a fine of 2,500 kroner.

The tightening of the rules was meant to reduce disturbance for war veterans, refugees, and pets. For many, loud explosions and flashing lights can cause distress. Police expect to maintain last year’s increased enforcement to ensure everyone follows the law.

Police to Maintain Strict Control

Last year, authorities put significant time and resources into explaining and enforcing the new rules. The National Police noted more reports of violations as people adjusted to the law. Officers hope the message has now spread and that they will see fewer cases this season.

However, catching offenders can still be tricky. Fireworks are often fired quickly and from residential areas, making it hard to locate the source. Police encourage residents to take note of details, such as descriptions or license plates, if they see early fireworks, as such information helps investigations.

In addition to patrols on the ground, police have focused on schools. Officers visit classrooms to teach children about safety and explain the law. This year, online monitoring is also a priority. Several illegal fireworks are sold through foreign websites, often with little information about safety standards. Police warn that such products can be extremely dangerous and may explode unpredictably.

Higher Penalties for Retailers

Retailers face stricter penalties as well. Those who sell fireworks outside the approved sales period from December 15 to 31 risk fines of at least 10,000 kroner, double the previous amount. The government hopes these measures will make it harder for illegal sellers to operate and ensure that consumers buy only from certified shops.

The police also urge Danes to buy fireworks only from authorized vendors. Imported or unapproved products often fail to meet safety requirements and can cause serious accidents. This is especially relevant now when online trade has made it easier to order fireworks that do not meet Danish standards.

Support from Animal Welfare Organizations

Animal rights groups, including Dyreværnet, have welcomed the stricter laws. Many animals panic during New Year’s celebrations, which can lead to injuries or even cause pets to run away. Although advocates would prefer a complete ban, they recognize the new restrictions as an important step toward greater safety for both people and animals.

At the same time, the new rules are reshaping how Danes prepare for celebrations. With fewer days allowed for fireworks, many households are turning their focus to alternative ways to mark the new year, such as communal dinners, cultural events, and traditional New Year’s customs. Because of that, police hope to see a calmer atmosphere and fewer accidents as midnight approaches.

Public Cooperation Is Key

Ultimately, Danish authorities believe that cooperation between citizens, retailers, and police will determine whether this holiday season remains safe and orderly. By following the new guidelines and reporting violations, people can help reduce avoidable injuries, protect vulnerable groups, and maintain Denmark’s long-standing tradition of welcoming the new year responsibly.
