Avisen Danmark has published a feature on Brørup Bio, the volunteer-run cinema in Vejen Municipality that has grown into a busy culture house and now says it lacks space.
The report, published on August 24, 2026, describes the venue at Nørregade 22 in Brørup. According to Avisen Danmark, the old cinema hall now also hosts stand-up, intimate concerts and theme events.
The auditorium seats 145 people for screenings, and films are shown almost every day. Daily operations rest on 128 volunteers, organized through Foreningen Brørup Bios Venner, founded in 1993.
Chair Lone Wagner Olesen has volunteered since 1993 and took over as chair in 2025. Maria Jakobsen has been part of the team for about a year and a half, per the same report.
Brørup Bio is financed through municipal support from Vejen Kommune, supplemented by a fundraising group. That group applies for grants for equipment such as vacuum cleaners, lighting and a defibrillator.
The association rents the hall and does not aim to make money on operations. Ticket prices and kiosk prices are kept low, and a working group looks for offers on candy and drinks.
The volunteers have used unusual event ideas to draw audiences. A horror night ended with two disguised people staging a mock chainsaw attack in the hall. Dead pheasants were hung outside for the screening of “Fasandræberne”, and props from Billund Travbane were borrowed for the 2013 film “Tarok”.
The venue also programs live sports and special screenings. Denmark’s men’s handball World Championship matches were shown in January with draft beer and costumed guests. In May, Vejen Kommune and Brørup Bio held a free screening of the 1960 classic “Baronessen fra benzintanken” during the national dementia week.

Two years ago, the cinema installed a digital projector. Before that, physical film reels went to the largest cities first, and Brørup could wait months for new titles. Wagner Olesen also criticized the need for Danish subtitles on Danish films, pointing to music mixed too loudly against dialogue.
Regional outlets have tracked the growth
JydskeVestkysten reported in July 2026 that visitor numbers rose 45 percent in one year, describing the cinema as a cultural landmark in Brørup. The local outlet MigogVejen noted in July 2026 that the volunteer-run model had reached 30 years and was being marked locally.
Guests come from most of Southern Jutland, tracked on a foyer map where visitors pin their hometown. A September concert with the Guns N’ Roses tribute band Dust N’ Bones is planned, and comedian Torben Chris performs two shows on March 6, 2027.
The volunteers say the main thing missing is space. Expansion is not possible because the association rents the premises, though Wagner Olesen said a large and a small auditorium would be preferable. The cinema’s own website lists the address as Nørregade 22, 6650 Brørup, with an event calendar.
