Are you tired of the same old tourist attractions in Copenhagen? As an expat living in Denmark, I understand the need to explore beyond the typical spots. That’s why I’ve put together a comprehensive list of Copenhagen hidden gems that are off the beaten path.

From a cemetery turned park to a church known for its unique architecture, these spots offer a different perspective on Danish culture. So, let’s dig in!

Why Expats Should Explore Copenhagen Hidden Gems

Copenhagen is a beautiful city with much to offer, but many tourists and expats tend to stick to the main attractions like Tivoli Gardens, the Little Mermaid statue, and Nyhavn. While these spots are undoubtedly worth a visit, there is so much more to discover in this city.

Exploring Copenhagen hidden gems is an excellent way to connect with the local culture and experience a side of the city that few others do. While it can be tempting to stick to popular tourist attractions, doing so means you miss out on the unique experiences that can be found elsewhere. Additionally, many of these hidden gems are free or relatively inexpensive, making them perfect for expats on a budget.

Assistens Cemetery: A Park in the City and One of Copenhagen Hidden Gems

Assistens Cemetery, hidden gem copenhagen

First on our list of Copenhagen hidden gems is Assistens Cemetery, one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful and peaceful parks. Yet, this location remains relatively unknown to tourists and even some locals.

While Assistens Cemetery is now a park, it has a fascinating history that dates back hundreds of years. The cemetery was founded in the 1700s, and many famous Danish figures are buried here. This includes Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaardand. The cemetery is also the final resting place for many other notable Danes, including politicians, artists, and writers.

Over time, however, Assistens has grown to become a park that is home to many tall trees, green lawns, and winding paths. These make it a sweet spot for a quiet stroll or picnic with friends.

Freetown Christiania: A Neighborhood in Copenhagen

Christiania, Copenhagen's hidden gem

Christiania is a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood that is unlike anything else in Denmark, or even the world.  In the 1970s, Denmark was experiencing a housing crisis, and many buildings in Copenhagen were abandoned. A group of young people saw an opportunity and took over an old military barracks in the Christianshavn neighborhood. The community that emerged was a haven for hippies, artists, and others who rejected mainstream society

Today, Christiania is a vibrant community with its own set of rules and values. Some of the rules include not running in the streets and not taking photographs of things and people without asking them first. Some of the buildings in this neighborhood date back to the 16th century, and the streets have a 70s feel to them. When visiting this neighborhood, it is important to prioritize safety precautions and stay alert to the happenings around you.

Grundtvig’s Church: A Must-See for Architecture Enthusiasts and One of Copenhagen’s Hidden Gems

Grundtvig's Church, Copenhagen's gem

Grundtvig’s Church is a great example of expressionist architecture and one of Copenhagen’s most unique landmarks. The church is characterized by its yellow brick exterior and breathtaking interior design. If you are a fan of architecture, design, or history, then this is a must-see for you.

Architect Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint designed Grundtvig’s Church, but it was completed in 1940, long after his death. The church was built to honor the life and work of Danish theologian and poet Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig.

This church is not only an architectural marvel but also a popular venue for concerts, lectures, and other events. The church’s acoustics are exceptional, making it an ideal venue for classical music performances. Additionally, the church hosts a variety of events throughout the year, so be sure to check its website to see what’s happening during your visit.

Tivoli Gardens: A Copenhagen Hidden Gem for sure!

Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen

Tivoli Gardens is undoubtedly one of Copenhagen’s most popular tourist attractions. It offers a wide variety of rides and attractions, from classic roller coasters to more modern thrill rides. There are also games, shows, and activities for all ages, making it a perfect destination for families.

However, there’s more to this place than just rides and games. The park is home to lush gardens, fountains, and pavilions. It’s a perfect spot to relax, have a picnic, or just take in the scenery. Some of Copenhagen’s best restaurants are also here, so be sure to grab a bite to eat while you’re there.

While Tivoli Gardens is open year-round, the best time to visit is during the summer months when the park is in full swing. The park is decorated with colorful lights, and there are concerts and other performances throughout the summer. However, if you’re looking for a quieter experience, consider visiting during the off-season when the park is less crowded.

The Carlsberg Brewery is one of Denmark’s most famous brands, but few people know about its surprising history. J.C. Jacobsen founded the brewery in 1847. Then, it was originally located outside the city walls because of the high taxes on beer. Today, the brewery is a popular tourist attraction, offering tours and tastings.
