Four Romanian men arrested in Romania will be extradited to Denmark, charged with the killing of a 37-year-old man found dead in the Gudenåen river near Silkeborg in August.
Midt- og Vestjyllands Politi has confirmed the arrests in a press release, DR reports. The four men, aged 22, 25, 26 and 31, were detained at different locations in Romania a day earlier.
According to the police district, the men were remanded in custody in absentia last Friday and charged with manslaughter. They will be extradited to Denmark and brought before a judge for a preliminary hearing. Police have not said when the extradition will take place.
The case began on 24 August 2026, when the body of a 37-year-old man was found in the Gudenåen near Svostrup, north of Silkeborg. Police said the following day that they believed they were dealing with a killing. The body had been weighed down by a car battery tied to it.
Berlingske reports that the custody ruling in absentia allowed Danish authorities to issue European arrest warrants, which led to the arrests in Romania. Ekstra Bladet also reports that all four are expected to face preliminary hearings in a Danish court.
Suspects and victim were working in Denmark
Both the four charged men and the victim were in Denmark to work, according to Midt- og Vestjyllands Politi. The police district has not given further details about their employment.
Investigators believe the crime scene is a holiday house in Pramdragerparken near Fårvang, and they are still seeking witnesses. Police commissioner Theis Thylstrup said officers have spoken with many people in the area but remain interested in tips from residents.
Per Thylstrup, police want to hear from anyone who was present in that area between Thursday 20 August and Monday 24 August, when the 37-year-old was found dead. He asked in particular for reports of anything suspicious observed during those days.
The police district says it does not believe further accomplices are at large. As stated by Thylstrup, the investigation continues at high intensity, but police believe they now have the four people behind the killing.
The victim was identified by police in the weeks after the discovery, and Midt- og Vestjyllands Politi published photographs of him in late August as part of the investigation. The force has not released the names of the four charged men.
No date has been set for the extradition proceedings or for the hearings in Denmark. The charge of manslaughter has not yet been tested in court, and the four men have not been convicted.
