Avisen Danmark has published a review of a stay at the Slieve Donard hotel in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, setting out the Victorian property’s rooms, facilities and room rates.
The travel feature was published on August 23, 2026, and written in the first person by journalist Mette Grith Sørensen. According to Avisen Danmark, the overnight stay itself took place on June 27 and 28, 2026. The paper states that the trip was arranged by Tourism Ireland, which paid for transport, accommodation and meals.
The hotel is located on Downs Road in Newcastle, County Down, with the postal code BT33 0AH. It sits directly on the coast with views over the Irish Sea and the Mourne Mountains behind it. The building is named after Slieve Donard, which at 850 meters is Northern Ireland’s highest point.
As reported by Avisen Danmark, the hotel opened in 1898 as one of the large Victorian luxury hotels of its day. The reporter describes the red building as resembling a fairytale castle when seen from the outside.
The property has 181 rooms and six suites, per the same article. It reopened in 2023 following an extensive renovation and is today part of Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts, a group that specializes in historic hotels with a strong local identity. The hotel is open year round.
The reporter stayed in a Slieve Sea View King Suite, which she estimates at between 40 and 50 square meters, excluding the bathroom. The bathroom is described as having a shower, a bath, a toilet, a bidet and two sinks. The room contained a four poster bed, a bay window with two chairs, a writing desk, armchairs, a coffee machine, a safe, a fridge and an iron.
On prices, Avisen Danmark reports that a Slieve King or Slieve Twin room starts at 189 British pounds, or about 1,660 Danish kroner, depending on whether it is low or high season. Breakfast can be purchased separately. The Slieve Sea View King Suite starts at 399 pounds, roughly 3,500 kroner, with breakfast included.
The hotel has a restaurant, J.J. Farrall’s, named after the hotel’s architect. There is also a fitness center, a hair salon and a spa, which one of the reporter’s fellow travelers tested and recommended. The article notes that the bartender at The Wolf Bar made what the reporter calls a perfect vodka martini.
According to the piece, the hotel draws golfers in particular, along with guests marking milestone birthdays and other large family celebrations. A local guide told the reporter that she and her siblings regularly invited their mother for a weekend stay at Slieve Donard when the family had something to celebrate.
