US Greenland mission cancelled amid Trump pressure

A planned US mission to Greenland has been cancelled, and Danish and Greenlandic voices warn the episode could weaken Denmark’s account of its own sovereignty and be used politically by President Donald Trump.

DR reports that the trip, linked to Trump’s renewed push for American control over Greenland, will not go ahead as planned. According to the broadcaster, the cancellation risks undermining the Danish narrative about the Arctic and could be exploited by Trump.

The mission was framed on the American side as a fact-finding trip. It was to examine Greenland’s geostrategic position and its critical mineral potential. As reported by Information in March 2025, Danish and Greenlandic authorities viewed the plan as a provocation rather than a neutral visit.

Information also reported that US advisers had first considered traveling before the Inatsisartut election in early March 2025. The visit was postponed to avoid accusations of trying to influence the outcome of that vote.

Berlingske reported in March 2025 on a separate, far more publicized American visit. It involved Usha Vance, Congressman Michael Waltz and US energy executive Chris Wright, who were due to attend the annual dogsled race in Sisimiut. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described that planned visit as unacceptable in an interview with TV 2.

Per Berlingske, the broader Greenland program was then scrapped after Danish and Greenlandic pushback. It was replaced by a narrower stop at the US Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland.

Researchers point to pressure on Denmark

Rasmus Sinding Søndergaard, senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, told Berlingske in March 2025 that Trump’s ambition to secure Greenland had not changed. He said the strategy is to pressure Denmark and Greenland into giving in, even when short-term tactics shift.

Altinget reported in April 2025 that the US administration uses selective history about Greenland. According to that analysis, the framing seeks to present the island as effectively no man’s land. It thereby challenges the Danish position that Denmark holds sovereignty over Greenland under the constitution and international agreements.

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen described the American effort in January 2026 as a diplomatic extreme. They said it breaks with international law and the Danish constitution. As noted in their assessment, US demands have sown doubt about Denmark’s authority and been accompanied by vague threats.

No official statement from the Danish or American governments detailing the decision to cancel the mission could be identified in open sources. Public accounts of who cancelled what, and when, rest on media reporting and expert commentary.
