Islands Brygge assault: 2 more charged in Swede’s death

Københavns Politi has charged two more men with violence over an assault at a World Cup screening on Islands Brygge in Copenhagen in June. A 32-year-old Swedish man died after the incident.

The new charges were announced on Friday, August 21, 2026, through the police messaging service Politi Update. Avisen Danmark reports that a total of three men are now charged in the case.

One of the newly charged is a 24-year-old Danish citizen. He is accused of trampling on the Swedish man while he lay on the ground, and of hitting another Swedish citizen. The second is a 29-year-old Somali citizen, accused of kicking that second man.

Both men are charged under section 244 of the Danish criminal code, known as the mild violence provision. Politiken reports the same charges and notes that the three cases will be tried separately.

The 24-year-old Dane has been questioned and released again. Police assess that there is no basis for seeking his pre-trial detention. The 29-year-old was charged by telephone and through his defense lawyer, as officers have not yet been able to locate him.

According to Ekstra Bladet, the 29-year-old is also charged with breaching an entry ban to Denmark imposed in an earlier case. A 31-year-old man was charged earlier in the investigation and remains in custody. He came to Denmark from Congo as an infant and is a Danish citizen.

Copenhagen City Court is due to decide next week whether his detention should be extended. Police state that there is no information indicating that the three men acted together, which is why the cases are being handled separately.

The June 30 incident

The violence took place on June 30, 2026, at a big-screen event on Islands Brygge in Copenhagen. The screening showed the World Cup match between Norway and Ivory Coast. The 32-year-old Swedish man was employed by the Swedish police but attended the event privately.

Ekstra Bladet has named the victim as Christian Zedig and reports that he died at Rigshospitalet from his injuries. Københavns Politi confirmed his death on July 4, 2026, in a message on Politi Update. The assault at the fan zone has been under investigation since then.

TV 2 Nyheder reported on July 29, 2026, that the prosecution intends to pursue the case under the mild violence provision despite the fatal outcome. BT also reported the two additional charges on Friday, confirming the link to the fatal incident.
