Øresund Bridge closed after multi-vehicle crash

The Øresund Bridge was closed in both directions on Thursday afternoon after a traffic accident involving several vehicles on the Sweden-bound carriageway. One person sustained minor injuries.

Avisen Danmark reports that the crossing between Denmark and Sweden was shut in both directions on August 20, 2026, in connection with a multi-vehicle crash. The bridge operator’s website stated that the closure began at 16.15 and that traffic was expected to move again at 18.15.

According to the same report, the accident happened in the direction of Sweden, about one kilometer before the toll booths. Duty officer Nicolai Ullits of Copenhagen Police explained that debris from the Sweden-bound lane had been thrown into the opposite lane. That is why both directions were blocked rather than one.

One person was injured in the accident. Copenhagen Police described the injury as minor, as reported by Avisen Danmark. BT also reported a single injured person and described the incident as a serious accident.

Responsibility for the scene rested primarily with Swedish police and fire services, since the crash occurred on the Swedish-facing stretch. Danish police also sent a patrol to the site. Politiken reported the same division of responsibility, along with the 16.15 closure and the planned 18.15 reopening.

Police advice to drivers on the bridge

In a message published on Politi Update, Copenhagen Police said further emergency vehicles could become relevant at the scene. The message advised people caught in the closure to remain inside their vehicles. Motorists were also directed to follow P4 traffic radio for updates.

Accounts of the expected reopening differed slightly across outlets. BT reported that the Danish Road Directorate, Vejdirektoratet, expected the closure to last until around 18.00. The bridge operator Øresundsbron and Politiken both gave 18.15 as the expected reopening time.

The number of vehicles involved was not specified in the reporting available Thursday afternoon. Avisen Danmark, which carried the story via the news agency Ritzau, referred only to an accident with several vehicles. BT noted that its account was based on Swedish coverage and traffic information.

The Øresund Bridge carries both road and rail traffic between Copenhagen and Malmö. The closure applied to road traffic in both directions while emergency crews worked at the site. Copenhagen Police issued its traffic notice under the heading of an accident on the Øresund motorway toward Sweden, with both lanes blocked.

As of the reports filed Thursday afternoon, no further details had been released about the cause of the crash. Copenhagen Police had confirmed only the location, the lane obstruction caused by debris, and the minor injury. The bridge operator’s traffic information page remained the reference point for the closure and reopening times.
