Data center boom faces 10-year grid wait in Denmark

DR reports that another large data center may be on the way in Denmark, even though earlier plans for such facilities met local resistance.

The report, published by DR, describes a new data center project moving ahead despite opposition to similar plans. It adds to a series of contested hyperscale projects now working their way through Danish municipalities. Several of those cases have drawn objections from neighbors and from politicians concerned about power supply.

One of the clearest examples is in Varde. As reported by Computerworld on June 26, 2026, the municipal council decided to begin work on the local plans required for Microsoft to build data centers near Tinghøj and Lunde. The decision came after considerable resistance from future neighbors, and includes a condition that Microsoft submit a plan by the end of September 2026 for compensating the closest neighbors.

In Holbæk Municipality, a planned hyperscale facility has prompted the formation of a citizens’ group. According to DKnyt, reporting on April 24, 2026, the project is expected to require about 350 megawatts of electricity, roughly six times the municipality’s consumption at that time. Mayor Christina Krzyrosiak Hansen said the project remained at an early stage with no final decisions taken.

Altinget reported on May 21, 2026 that a local developer had applied to Holbæk Municipality to build what has been described as the Nordic region’s largest data center. A third case has emerged in West Jutland. Per Avisen Danmark on August 3, 2026, the group behind a project at Stovstrup argues it is obvious that the facility should be connected to the grid.

Grid capacity at the center of the debate

Electricity supply has become the main constraint. As noted by Danmarks Naturfredningsforening on June 19, 2026, Energinet has paused processing some new grid-connection applications, leaving large projects facing waits of up to ten years. The organization also noted a government proposal for an emergency grid plan that would place green power projects ahead of data centers in the queue.

Figures cited by the newspaper Information and relayed by Danmarks Naturfredningsforening point to plans for more than 30 new data centers in Denmark in the coming years. Industry association Danish Data Center Industry said in a report on May 1, 2026 that growth is driven by demand for AI, cloud and digital infrastructure.

That report estimated total installed capacity in Denmark could reach around 1.2 GW by 2030. The association also said Energinet’s connection queue reflects projects totaling roughly 14 to 15 GW, and argued that figure distorts the picture, since many proposals will never be built. Local resistance continues, as seen in the case of a Danish village fighting a giant data center plan.
