The Odyssey sells 509,680 tickets in Denmark, tops 2026

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has sold 509,680 cinema tickets in Denmark since its July premiere, making it the country’s best-selling film of 2026 so far.

The trade body Danske Biografer confirmed the milestone about one month after the film opened in Danish cinemas. DR reports that the adaptation of Homer’s epic about Odysseus and his journey home from Troy is the summer’s biggest cinema hit in Denmark.

With that figure, the film passed “Klassefesten 4 – Venner for livet”, which sold around 475,000 tickets earlier in 2026, according to Danske Biografer. Director Michael Valentin of Danske Biografer called the result excellent, noting that it came during a summer with unusually good weather and strong competition for audiences.

Official figures published on August 13, 2026 by Det Danske Filminstitut put “The Odyssey” at 453,000 admissions at that point, with “Klassefesten 4” at 467,470. The film institute described both titles as central drivers of summer cinema attendance in Denmark.

The Danish comedy had held the top spot for months. Kino.dk reported in May 2026 that it had passed 450,000 tickets and was the year’s most watched film, while the four-film series had sold more than two million tickets in total. Filmmagasinet Ekko listed it in mid-June 2026 at 467,731 tickets, calling it the year’s largest hit at the time.

Valentin attributes the success of “The Odyssey” partly to a broad rollout across the whole country and to appeal across age groups. He said the film reaches several generations and that Nolan is known for uncompromising quality. DR has also reported that international critics have been enthusiastic, summarizing reviews as saying Nolan outdid himself.

According to Valentin, distributors have moved back toward cinema-first releases after the years when studios prioritized streaming during the pandemic. He said “The Odyssey” was marketed exclusively to cinema audiences, with the message that the film had to be seen on a big screen.

The competition remains close. Spider-Man: Brand New Day”, which premiered in Denmark on July 29, 2026, has been seen by about 383,000 cinema-goers, DR reports. Berlingske reported on August 3, 2026, citing SF Studios, that the superhero film drew 158,163 viewers in its first days, against 82,157 tickets for “The Odyssey” from July 16 to 19.

Both films feature Tom Holland and Zendaya. The cast of “The Odyssey” also includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron. DR has previously reported that the film drew criticism over the skin color of some characters, prompting debate about whether the well-reviewed production had become “woke”.
