The Ukrainian cinema version of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is about three seconds shorter than the international release. The missing segment contains a song by Russian anti-war singer Monetochka.
DR reports that the new Marvel film is the first in the studio’s catalogue to feature a Russian song on its soundtrack. The track is “Monopolija” by the Russian pop singer Monetochka, and it plays for roughly three seconds.
The scene shows Peter Parker arriving at Brighton Beach to meet Yelena Belova, also known as Black Widow. In Ukrainian cinemas, that passage has been removed from the Ukrainian-dubbed version. The film opened in Ukraine on July 29, 2026, the same day as in Denmark and the United Kingdom.
The edit first became public through a viewer. On the premiere date, a user on the social platform Threads asked whether the Ukrainian dub contained a song by Monetochka, writing that she would return her ticket if it did. Two hours later she updated the thread, saying the cinema chain Planeta Kino had told her the segment had been cut.
Planeta Kino later told the independent Russian outlet Meduza that it does not edit films itself, and that changes are made by the distributor. Referring to official information from that distributor, the chain stated that the roughly three-second episode had been completely removed from the Ukrainian version. It added that the plot and overall concept of the film remain unchanged.
The film’s Ukrainian distributor is B&H Film Distribution. According to Meduza’s reporting, as summarized by DR, the company has published no information about the removal. No official explanation for the cut has been made public.
Monetochka, whose civil name is Jelizaveta Gyrdymova, is described by DR as Kremlin-critical and pro-Ukrainian. She left Russia after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine and now lives in Latvia. In Russia she has been labeled a foreign agent and convicted in absentia over her anti-war positions.
In a video on Instagram, the singer has said that she can produce her music freely in Latvia. She also described organizing benefit concerts for Ukraine together with the Russian rapper Noize MC. The two were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025 for that work. Monetochka has not commented on the removal of her song.
The cut affects only the Ukrainian theatrical release. The sequence with Monetochka’s music remains in the international version, including the copies shown in Danish and British cinemas. In Kyiv, the film is screening both in English and in the Ukrainian dub.
In Denmark, the film sold 36,879 tickets on its opening day, according to figures from Kino.dk cited by DR. That is the best opening day for a Spider-Man film in Danish cinemas. The production is also notable for its 165 commercial partnerships, ranging from BMW cars to Bero beer.
