A 15-year-old girl who left her home in Hedensted on Tuesday morning has been found alive in Hungary, Southeast Jutland Police said Thursday.
The girl disappeared from her home in Hedensted in eastern Jutland on the morning of Tuesday, August 4. She was located alive in Hungary on Thursday, August 6, Avisen Danmark reports. The story was published as a breaking news item at 17:57 by reporter Kristoffer Olesen.
The information comes from a press release from Sydøstjyllands Politi, the police district covering the Hedensted area. According to the force, the girl’s family has been informed, and officers are now working to bring her back to Denmark.
Police also said they are examining whether anything criminal took place in connection with the disappearance. No details about possible suspects or charges were made public.
Vice police inspector Christian Skyt said officers are relieved that the girl was found alive, and that the immediate focus is getting her safely home to Denmark. Per Skyt, the investigation continues in cooperation with Hungarian police and Europol to establish the circumstances of the case.
Out of consideration for the investigation, the girl and her family, the police said they had no further comments on the case or on her condition for now.
The girl had been missing for two days before she was located. Helicopters took part in the search for her in Denmark, according to Avisen Danmark, which published a photo of the search effort credited to Mads Dalegaard.
Sydøstjyllands Politi thanked the many citizens and media outlets that helped share the public alert, photographs and information in the case. The force said the alert is no longer relevant, and that it will therefore no longer publish the girl’s name or use her picture.
Avisen Danmark stated that it is likewise no longer naming the girl or using her photo, now that the search has ended. The outlet published the story in its crime section.
Several key details remain unpublished, including how the girl traveled from Hedensted to Hungary and where in the country she was found. Police have not said whether anyone has been detained in Hungary or in Denmark in connection with the case.
The involvement of Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency, indicates that the inquiry crosses borders. Sydøstjyllands Politi has not given a timeline for when the investigation is expected to be completed, or when the girl is expected to return to Denmark.
