Copenhagen Light Rail Chaos: 18 Crashes in Months

After 18 accidents on the new Greater Copenhagen Light Rail, officials are moving quickly to fix safety issues. Most of the incidents happened at night, and better lighting and clearer road design may be part of the solution.

Frequent Accidents Raise Safety Concerns

In less than three months, 18 drivers have accidentally ended up on the light rail tracks between Ishøj and Lyngby. The series of accidents has created growing concern among local authorities and residents. Greater Copenhagen Light Rail now acknowledges that safety improvements are urgently needed to keep cars off the tramway.

According to operations manager Frank Pedersen, every accident so far has occurred in the dark. The company believes a lack of clear lighting could be confusing drivers, especially in new traffic setups where rail tracks and roads run close together. To reduce these mistakes, the company is working on measures to make the track areas more visible at night.

For drivers trying to understand the complex road layout, following Danish traffic rules carefully is essential. Resources like driving in Denmark guides can help clarify how signs and lanes are structured when new traffic systems are introduced.

Learning From Other Cities

Interestingly, the team behind the project is now looking to other Danish cities for inspiration. Both Odense and Aarhus have light rail systems that faced similar early issues but eventually improved safety through adjustments in design, lighting, and signage. Pedersen says examining what worked elsewhere could help develop suitable fixes for Copenhagen’s busy route.

He maintains that while safety has been prioritized from the beginning, the number of accidents shows adjustments are needed. “We learn from each incident where and why something went wrong,” he explained earlier this week.

Traffic Experts Call for Predictable Design

Traffic safety specialists agree that predictable road setups are a key factor in reducing driver confusion. Danish traffic researcher Tove Hels from Aalborg University notes that motorists are not yet fully familiar with how light rail systems interact with normal streets. When drivers encounter this unfamiliar element, they may make wrong turns or drift onto the tracks.

Without clear road markings or consistent lighting, a split-second error can easily put a driver in the wrong place. Better guidance and visual cues can help prevent such dangerous situations.

Local Officials Demand Fast Action

Gladsaxe mayor Serdal Benli, who also sits on the light rail board, recently toured one of the intersections near Glostrup Hospital, where several accidents have taken place. He described how the layout could easily confuse drivers, especially after dark.

Benli now urges immediate action to address lighting, signage, and road striping along the route. He insists that these improvements must be implemented before the northern stretch of the light rail opens later this year. The goal is to ensure that accidents do not continue once more of the line becomes operational.

The light rail project involves Region Hovedstaden and eleven municipalities, including Lyngby-Taarbæk, Gladsaxe, Herlev, Albertslund, Rødovre, Glostrup, Brøndby, Hvidovre, Vallensbæk, Ishøj, and Høje-Taastrup. The southern section from Ishøj to Rødovre opened in autumn 2025, while the full line to Lundtofte is expected to be completed by summer 2026.

For foreigners using the roadways or considering car ownership, reading about topics such as cars in Denmark for foreigners can also clarify vehicle regulations and help avoid similar confusion.

Looking Ahead

The combination of new lighting, better signage, and lessons from other cities could soon make the Greater Copenhagen Light Rail safer for everyone. Until then, both motorists and pedestrians are being reminded to take extra caution around construction zones and crossings.

Even though no major injuries have been reported, authorities agree that consistent and predictable traffic layouts are essential to preventing further accidents. The next few months will be crucial as adjustments are tested before the system’s full launch.
