Two people lost their lives in a tragic head-on bus crash near Hornslet, north of Aarhus. Police are investigating slippery road conditions as a possible factor while several others remain injured but stable.
Fatal Collision in Hornslet
Two regional buses from transport company Midttrafik collided head-on Wednesday morning on Landevejen in Hornslet, Djursland, sparking a major emergency response. The crash claimed the lives of a 32-year-old man from the Aarhus area and a 52-year-old man from Djursland. Their families have been notified.
According to East Jutland Police, eight other people were transported to Skejby Hospital with injuries but are all out of life-threatening danger. Both drivers were among the injured.
GoCollective, the company operating the buses, said one driver suffered a broken arm and required surgery, while the other escaped with minor bruises. The firm has arranged crisis counseling for employees affected by the tragedy.
Police Investigation Underway
Investigators are still determining what caused the accident. A car inspector was called to the scene to examine vehicle damage and skid patterns. East Jutland Police confirmed they are reviewing video footage retrieved from inside the buses and interviewing passengers and witnesses who are able to speak.
Multiple patrol cars, ambulances, and rescue teams were sent after the first emergency call came in late Wednesday morning, reporting that two blue regional buses had collided between Eskerod and Rodskov. Fourteen people were reportedly involved in the crash.
Tragically, the two victims were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical teams. The scale of the operation temporarily shut down the road in both directions, affecting local traffic and Midttrafik’s schedules.
Residents Describe Dangerous Road Conditions
A local resident living near the crash site said the roads were extremely slippery that morning. He recalled hearing a loud bang just before sirens started echoing through the area. Later, when he drove nearby, parts of the road were so slick they felt like glass, especially in shaded stretches where the asphalt sloped slightly northward.
The sudden freeze has raised awareness again about how cold Denmark can get during winter. Such icy conditions can turn rural roads treacherous within minutes, particularly in wooded areas like Hornslet.
Slippery Roads Among Several Theories
East Jutland Police confirmed that icy conditions are one of several possible explanations under review. While roads were visibly slick that morning, investigators have not ruled out other mechanical or human factors.
Because of the ongoing investigation, officers asked commuters to avoid the area until the road could reopen safely. By midday, Landevejen remained closed in both directions.
The local community has responded with grief and concern as authorities work to piece together what went wrong. Police emphasized that determining the sequence of events will take time, given the number of witnesses and evidence sources involved.
Support for Those Affected
Midttrafik and GoCollective have offered full cooperation with the investigation and provided employees with psychological support. Meanwhile, police reminded the public that witnesses and relatives can reach free, confidential counseling through Denmark’s Victim Support service by phone or chat at 116 006.
The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly accidents can unfold on Denmark’s rural roads when winter weather turns severe.
For many in the region, the question of whether icy surfaces could have been prevented has become central, especially as forecasts predict continued freezing temperatures in the days ahead.
