Despite Meta’s ban on political ads, several Danish local election candidates have managed to keep their campaigns running on Facebook and Instagram. Experts warn that inconsistent enforcement could distort the election race.
Political Ads Reappear on Meta Platforms
Although Meta’s political ad ban has officially been in place since October 6, 2025, Danish local candidates still find ways around it. A review by Danish broadcaster P1 Morning found 40 examples where paid political posts slipped through Meta’s automated filters.
By searching Meta’s public ad library for terms like “Venstre,” “Social Democrats,” “candidate,” and “election,” researchers identified several active and inactive ads that should have been blocked. Some of these ads ran for just a few hours; others stayed visible for up to ten days, enough time to reach thousands of Facebook users.
Candidate Defies Restrictions to Reach Voters
One of the candidates who continued to advertise is Lene Bach Nørgaard, running for the Moderates in Viborg’s municipal election. Her ads promoted her local campaign and called for voter support, which violates Meta’s policies on content relating to “social issues, elections, or politics.”
She argues that social media is crucial for new candidates trying to compete with established local politicians who already receive extensive media coverage. In her view, the ban makes it harder for newcomers to introduce themselves to voters across local communities.
Meta introduced its European-wide rules following new EU guidelines intended to bring more transparency to online political messaging. Since the restriction took effect, Meta’s AI systems and moderators have removed ad content from nearly all political parties. However, as this case shows, enforcement remains inconsistent.
Experts Say the Loopholes Create an Uneven Playing Field
According to digital campaign experts, the small but persistent number of ads still online poses a problem for electoral fairness. Valdemar Osted of Common Consultancy explains that even if only a handful of candidates breach the policy, these violations could influence outcomes in close local contests.
Research normally suggests that political advertisements do not drastically change voting behavior. Yet experts point out that when most candidates are silenced and only a few manage to run visible ads, those few enjoy unusually high visibility and may sway last-minute decisions among undecided voters.
The issue also touches on the broader challenge of regulating digital electioneering in a decentralized system. Denmark’s municipal elections feature around 9,000 candidates, each with limited oversight compared to national campaigns. Monitoring all their online activity is nearly impossible, raising concerns about transparency and fairness across Meta’s platforms.
Mixed Impact Across Danish Politics
While some candidates openly admit to posting paid political messages, most seem unaware of how the ban works or when it applies. Others rely on volunteers or campaign managers who fail to notice that Meta has blocked their ads altogether. In several cases, Facebook’s systems removed campaigns only after they had already reached a significant number of voters.
Observers note that Meta’s uneven enforcement reflects a much broader issue seen across Europe, where new EU transparency laws have collided with automated digital systems not designed for local languages and small-scale elections. Danish researchers expect the next election cycle will only amplify these challenges unless Meta improves its rule enforcement and communication with local political organizations.
The temporary loopholes have set off new discussions among Danish politicians about how platforms should balance strict digital advertising rules with equal democratic access. For now, the dispute shows no signs of cooling down, and Danish voters may continue seeing some degree of political content on Facebook despite the prohibition.
