Billund Airport Adds New Routes and Grows Traffic

Billund Airport enters a busy winter season with new flight routes, increased cargo capacity, and strong travel demand. Passenger numbers near pre-pandemic levels as airlines expand their presence in Denmark’s second-largest airport.

Strong Travel Activity and New Routes

Billund Airport is showing strong momentum heading into the winter season. The airport, located in western Denmark, has announced a wide range of new destinations and increased frequencies on existing routes as part of its winter flight schedule. October was particularly eventful, with the launch of new flight routes, a significant freight capacity upgrade by FedEx, and more than 278,000 passengers passing through the terminal. The numbers show steady growth in travel activity.

A highlight for upcoming travel is Norwegian’s expansion, adding 10 direct routes starting in spring 2026. New destinations include Barcelona, Edinburgh, Gran Canaria, Crete, Malta, Milan, Naples, Nice, Porto, and Rome. These additions strengthen both tourism and business travel options directly from Billund. The new routes make Billund more connected than before.

Wizz Air and British Airways Strengthen Their Presence

Low-cost carrier Wizz Air is also increasing its footprint, with a new direct route to Budapest launching in spring 2026. In October, the airline opened routes to Katowice, Chișinău, and Cluj-Napoca. These new connections are vital for west Danish businesses by improving regional accessibility and supporting workforce mobility.

In another major boost, British Airways will increase its weekly flights to London Heathrow to 12. The airline is also moving its operations to Terminal 5, making international connections easier for travelers from Billund. Together with Norwegian’s existing service to London Gatwick, passengers now have excellent access to one of Denmark’s most popular destinations.

Passenger Volume Bounces Back

During the October school break, more than 100,000 passengers traveled through the airport in just one week. Overall, Billund Airport recorded 278,251 passengers during the month, signaling significant recovery in demand. Although summer 2025 traffic remained about 25% below the previous year’s levels, the winter forecast is far more optimistic, with traffic expected to be only 5% below the winter prior.

Top destinations during the October holiday included:

  1. Spain
  2. United Kingdom
  3. Norway
  4. Romania
  5. Turkey

Winter Travel Options for Ski and City Lovers

With the start of daylight saving time on October 26, the winter flight schedule officially began. The new season includes a mix of city and ski destinations, such as Innsbruck and Katowice, catering to a wide array of travel interests. Key winter sunspots like Malaga, Gran Canaria, London, and Gdańsk remain popular choices.

Additionally, a total of 15 out of 24 previously suspended Ryanair routes have now been reestablished by other carriers. Billund not only retained its route network but added six brand-new destinations, reflecting the airport’s growing appeal.

Billund Emerges as a Freight Hub

Significant upgrades also came to the airport’s cargo operations in October. FedEx enhanced its freight service by deploying a larger aircraft on its routes that connect Billund with major European logistics hubs in Hanover, Paris, and Cologne. This change expands the airport’s logistics capabilities and supports increased import and export needs.

In total, 7,384 tons of cargo moved through Billund Airport in October alone, reinforcing its role as a vital logistics center in northern Europe.

Expanded Route Map Highlights Growing Choices

Several new and returning routes will feature in the 2025/2026 flight schedule, operated by both new and existing airline partners. Highlights include:

  • Norwegian: Malaga, Alicante, Barcelona, Milan, Malta, Naples, Rome, Porto
  • Wizz Air: Budapest, Gdańsk, Krakow, Chișinău, Cluj-Napoca
  • British Airways: London Heathrow
  • Vueling: Barcelona
  • Air Baltic: Tallinn

This expanded network, combined with competitive airline offerings, confirms Billund’s reputation as a key aviation hub outside Copenhagen. As demand continues growing and airlines invest in new routes, Billund Airport is on track to fully regain and possibly exceed pre-pandemic travel levels.
