Danes Unite With Fundraiser For Children in Global Crises

On September 7, over 10,000 Danes are expected to take to the streets nationwide in support of vulnerable children affected by hunger, conflict, and disasters across the globe. The fundraiser for children is organized by Save the Children Denmark (Red Barnet) amid a growing humanitarian crisis.

Nationwide Fundraiser for Children in Crisis

In response to the escalating number of international crises affecting millions of children, Save the Children Denmark is holding its annual national fundraiser on Sunday, September 7. Around 10,000 volunteers are expected to participate across Denmark, collecting donations to support children suffering from malnutrition, war, and displacement.

This year’s efforts come at a critical time, as global conflicts, natural disasters, and significant cuts in humanitarian aid have created worsening conditions for children in vulnerable regions. Conflicts in places like Sudan, Afghanistan, and Gaza have left children without access to food, clean water, education, or medical care.

A Danish Fundraiser For Children With Global Impact

Red Barnet’s initiative goes beyond borders. The funds raised will contribute directly to international and domestic child welfare efforts. In many parts of the world, including Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, and South Sudan, access to life-saving treatment for malnutrition is at risk due to dwindling humanitarian resources. According to Save the Children, without immediate support, these countries could run out of RUTF – Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food – within the next three months.

This specialized peanut-based paste is essential in the treatment of severe acute malnutrition and has been used successfully for over 30 years. Its shortage is expected to endanger the lives of hundreds of thousands of children. A recent analysis shows that by 2025, an estimated 15.6 million people in 18 countries will lose access to life-saving aid, including 2.3 million severely malnourished children.

The Effects of Aid Cuts

Recent cuts to international aid, particularly from donors such as USAID, have worsened the crisis. Hospitals and schools have been forced to shut down across developing nations, and countless families have lost access to food, medical supplies, and clean water. Vulnerable groups such as women and children have been particularly hard hit due to reduced protective services against violence and abuse.

Red Barnet aims to mitigate some of these impacts through Sunday’s collection effort, urging Danes to contribute whatever they can. Every krone donated will go toward ensuring food, water, education, and protection for children both in Denmark and worldwide.

Mobilizing Volunteer Support Across Denmark With Fundraiser for Children

Save the Children Denmark expects approximately 10,000 people to participate in this year’s street collections. Each volunteer typically covers a route that brings in an average of 1,300 Danish kroner (approximately $190). This amount is enough for the organization to provide clean drinking water to over 300 children in Gaza or a week’s worth of nutritious aid to 22 malnourished children.

Last year, the event raised a total of 8.6 million kroner (approximately $1.26 million), with 100% of the proceeds channeled directly into aid programs. This year’s goal is to match or exceed that amount, as the need is even more urgent.

A Worsening Humanitarian Outlook

The escalating humanitarian crises in multiple regions have created dire circumstances. In places like Gaza, Save the Children reports widespread despair among children who are increasingly showing signs of trauma and hopelessness. Many suffer from hunger and dehydration, and some express a loss of the will to live amid the devastation.

Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, thousands of children are returning daily from neighboring countries into a nation where nearly half the population already needs aid. In Red Barnet clinics in Gaza, over 40% of pregnant and breastfeeding women seen last month were reported as undernourished.

Continuing the Mission

With active programs in Denmark and 116 other countries, Red Barnet continues its mission to save lives, support children in crisis, and advocate for their rights. By mobilizing citizens and reminding the public of the real, tangible impact their support can have, the 2025 nationwide fundraiser represents a critical lifeline for millions of children.

Red Barnet stresses that no donation is too small. The organization calls on Danes to support the volunteers collecting donations across the country and to help children who are suffering from the consequences of poverty, war, and neglect. The lives of millions of children depend on timely, collective action.
