In Copenhagen, 61-year-old Christina Morgenstjerne chooses not to spend New Year’s Eve alone. Instead, she’s inviting nine complete strangers into her home to celebrate. Across Denmark, thousands are doing the same through online platforms that help people connect for the holidays.

Choosing Company Over Isolation

When the town hall bells ring in the new year, Christina Morgenstjerne will pop the champagne with nine people she has never met before. The architect from Amager realized her friends already had plans, so she decided to open her home to strangers rather than face a quiet evening alone.

For her, New Year’s Eve is meant to be social and filled with laughter, not solitude. That’s why she joined a digital platform where thousands of Danes sign up to find someone to celebrate with. The initiative, which attracted over 21,000 users in the TV 2 Kosmopol region alone, shows just how many people crave companionship during the holidays.

The idea is straightforward. Participants create a profile and either search for people hosting a New Year’s party or invite guests themselves. The goal is to make it easier to meet new faces and maybe even form lasting friendships.
