A 19-year-old man has been charged with the killing of a 59-year-old man found badly beaten inside a house in Havdrup early Sunday. The suspect denies the charge.
Mid- and West Zealand Police were called to an address in Havdrup, near Solrød, shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday. Officers found a 59-year-old man badly beaten in the house and confirmed his death shortly afterward, DR reports.
The force said its investigation pointed to a 19-year-old man as a possible suspect. According to a statement from Mid- and West Zealand Police, he turned himself in at the police station in Roskilde at around 3:30 a.m.
Police were alerted after a report of a disturbance at the address. Per press officer Frederikke Borg Højfeldt of the police district, someone had heard commotion coming from the house.
Men were known to each other
The two men were acquaintances but had no family relationship, the police district told Ritzau. Officers said they knew each other from the same environment, and stressed that it was not a criminal environment.
As reported by Jyllands-Posten, the prosecution sought the suspect’s remand in custody at a constitutional hearing at Holbæk District Court at 3 p.m. Sunday. Police said a major investigation is under way to establish what preceded the 59-year-old’s death.
TV 2 Kosmopol reports that the alleged assault involved a blunt object. The broadcaster adds that the court was closed to the public at the prosecution’s request, to protect the ongoing investigation.
Ekstra Bladet, which was present in court on Sunday afternoon, reported that the 19-year-old denies the charge. The tabloid also described the scene in central Havdrup, where police had left the area while cordons and restricted-access signs remained in place.
Later on Sunday, DR reported that the 19-year-old had been remanded in custody by the court. He continues to deny guilt in the killing.
Havdrup is a town of roughly 4,600 residents, located between Roskilde and Køge in eastern Zealand. Homicides remain rare in Denmark, and questions about safety and crime rates often follow cases like this one.
Mid- and West Zealand Police have not released further details about the relationship between the two men or a possible motive. The force said the investigation into the circumstances of the death is continuing.
